...
Cow Shark Tooth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
Cow Shark Teeth are super rare in South Carolina, and this one is so beautifully preserved that it must have fallen directly to the ocean floor and been covered up immediately. The only other place I've seen cow shark teeth this nice is Aurora. The root is shiny because I applied preservative to prevent the razor thin root from degrading....
Aurora/Lee Creek Cow Sharks   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
I"m having probs posting photos in the forums, so en lieu of posting in the "Let's See Pics of your displays", I figured I"d post some this way. Here are my Cow Shark Teeth from Aurora/Lee Creek. Only a few are from Pungo, most are Yorktown Teeth...
Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
IMO, This is my wife's best find this weekend. Funny story... When we first got into the pit, I was looking for teeth to show my wife the type of deposits to look in to find teeth. I spotted a little outcropping of Yorktown with a bull shark tooth on a little pedestal. I called her over and told her to look in front of me. She bends down, looks for a minute, and then picks up this tooth. She didn't see the one I saw, but found the awesome one I missed!...

...
Aurora Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius

I found this Aurora Cow Shark tooth in the footprints of another collector. Surely they would have picked up this tooth had they seen it. They must have been looking for a big megalodon sitting out in the open and just missed it. Anytime people ask my advice how to find the big shark teeth in Aurora, I always tell them to look for the little ones. Its easy to see a big tooth sitting out in the open, but how often do you see that anymore? Almo...

...
Pathologic Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
I found this nice cow shark tooth in the Yorktown formation, and I assumed it was Hexanchus. I showed it to Pat Y. at the end of the day, and she was kind enough to tell me the difference. You can draw a straight line down the cones on Notorynchus teeth, while the primary cone on a Hexanchus is out of whack and messes up the straight line, even on juvenile specimens. Even though its not what I initially thought it was, it has a pathologic curvature to one of the cones ...
Lee Creek Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
I found this crossing a mound of Pungo towards the end of the day on the way back to the bus. I was getting worried I wouldn't find one. I don't find these often in SC, so I like to find one when I go to Lee Creek....
Lee Creek Notorhynchus teeth.   North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius

Here is a group of Notorhynchus teeth I collected in the Lee Creek mine near Aurora, North Carolina. Most of these I found myself, in the Pliocene Yorktown Formation and they were collected over a number of years. This frame has the best lower Notorhynchus teeth, from Lee Creek, that I have in my collection. I took the picture just as the sun was setting and it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked.

3/4" Unidentified Shark Tooth   Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA - Notorynchus primigenius

3/4" Cow Shark Tooth
15/16" Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
One of my goals every time I go to Aurora is to find a nice Cow shark tooth since we don't find many of them here in Summerville, SC, where I live. This is a little gem that fulfilled that hope for me on my fall 2003 trip to Aurora, NC....

3/4" Cow Shark Tooth
1/2" Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
This was among the last teeth I found today, and its one of the rarest teeth in my collection. Its an upper anterior cow shark tooth - the one right next to the parasymphesial. It wasn't on top of the pile, either. I found it raking, and I nearly missed it. Glad I didn't! Its a total drooler for a tooth dork like me!...
3/8" Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
When I found this tooth, I was satisfied that my hunt had been successful. Everything else I found was gravy after this one. When I found it, I was in the most intense part of my search. My nose was literally a foot from the ground!...
15/16" Cow Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Notorynchus primigenius
My expectation for my trip to Aurora was to find one of these. It was the first of the nice teeth I found. Its not be the best one out there, but as my first complete specimen, it will always have a special spot in my cases....
