C&D Thunder

I had a work event in the Wilmington area a few weeks ago so afterwards my goal was to do some collecting along the C&D Canal for a few hours.  Unfortunately for me, strong severe thunderstorms were predicted that day, and as my luck would have it they began as I walked out of the door for work.  I headed to the collecting area anyway hoping for a break in the weather.  My first attempt lasted about 15 minutes as I gathered up as many belemnites as I could find while dodging lightning bolts until giving up and deciding to wait a bit longer.  After some time listing to local talk radio and watching the ships move through the canal, my break would come.  I had about an hour to collect before the next storm would scare me off.  It was quite nice though even though it was a nice rain, I was comfortable.  I managed to find some belemnites and collect a few Cretaceous mollusk specimens, although my goal was to find shark teeth.  That proved difficult given the severe whiplash neck pain that I was experiencing every time a loud clap of thunder would startle me.  My favorite find was a nice pathological belemnite.  I had fun despite the weather but it was a long ride home though the storms!

My favorite is the deformed belemnite. Not a bad haul despite the storm activity!

Mike, yes, they are occasionally found there. I have yet to find any but it's possible. I think that they dredge the canal once in awhile and deposit the spoils in the same locations. The last time I was there it was like a bunch of sand dunes, this time there was a big hill that looked like it was dumped by a giant dump truck. I collected all over the area and found belemnites everywhere just about. I would have spent more time on top of the "hill" but the lightning flashing around kinda kept me in the lower spots :)
