Passing the torch

Saturday afternoon, I got a call from Indiana letting me know he couldn't go, and t$ has been strangely absent lately as well, so it was just tha duDe and me for Top Secret. Man, it was HOT when we got there. By the time we finished our walk down into the pit, we were drenched with sweat. We welcomed the breeze that a distant thunderstorm brought. 20 minutes later, though, as we were just getting into the hunt, the thunderstorm wasn't so distant anymore. Lightning danced across the southern sky, and we seriously considered leaving while we stood in the middle of an open field. We watched one cloud as it seemed to be heading off in a direction that didn't affect us. We decided to stick it out because we both wanted to find something for our efforts. Nose to the ground, I ignored the occasionaly big raindrop falling around me. And then I saw the root of what was to be my best find of the day. If the dude had found something then, we would have left, but he still was toothless. We had to stay. We got to the digging area, and it looked as if the worst was past. We only ever felt a little drizzle. Still not sure if we had been spared, we dug like the fossil lunatics we are. Finally, tha duDe's ship came in. He radioed me in excitement that he had found a nice meg. I walked over to see it and it was a killer! A 4 - 5 inch lower with tip, serrations, bourlette, root, and complete enamel. And the colors were killer. Since it was wet, it was really dark but I could already see a few white lines criss-crossing it. This was going to be a gorgeous tooth when it was cleaned and dried. He pranced back to his digging spot, and not 30 seconds later, I hear him shout out that I wouldn't believe it, but he just found another tooth the same size and even more awesome than the first. It looked like it was, but I was too excited to look carefully at it. I moved over near him and started digging, and within minutes, I had my second meg of the day. We would feast on victory bell today! We dug for another hour in search of yet another beauty, but none came and we left. How could we possibly expect more? What a day!
