Down in a Hole

Fossil hunting has been slow lately in Summerville. All the sites that were productive over the past few years have been completed. The new sites are moved away from areas where the fossil layers are close enough to the surface for us to reach them so they are a bust, too. When it rains we have ditch sites, but they just can't compare to digging for giant megalodon teeth!

When I found a few spot I got excited. Then when I actually got permission from the land owner to hunt there I because overjoyed. "At last I will have a chance to find a megalodon tooth," I thought to myself. The layer is under 18 - 36 inches of overburden but there is a huge area to hunt. We have been hitting it really hard lately trying so hard to find a big tooth. When I say hitting it hard, I mean it. We've hunted 10 of the last 14 days and our backs are taking a beating. Its hard to dig a hole that deep in the slop everyday. There are a lot of teeth to find but...

Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be anything complete at this site! This particular post has all of my finds from about 6 days of hunting. There aren't any complete teeth in this whole group, though some come close.

The madman in me says keep hunting and eventually I'll find a nice whole megalodon. So does the glutton for punishment. But the tooth hunter in me says that eventually I'll find two megs there ;-) Who do you think I'm gonna listen to?
