Retroflexus tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus retroflexus
This is the first really nice tooth I've found in the yellow ditch in a while. To be fair though, we haven't had much rain and the ditch really needs a lot of water to move the leaves and litter. People have just been throwing their garage trash (old wagons, paint cans, bikes, tarps, carpet, you name it) in the ditch. Its really slack! The weezling went with me on this trip, and he found a hammer in all the junk....
Isurus retroflexus Oligocene Mako Shark Tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus retroflexus

This is a little gem of a tooth that is a very good example of the species Isurus retroflexus. Its tough to see from the photo, but the blade is flattened, which is one of the keys to differentiating this species from Isurus desori, another Oligocene mako shark that has very similar looking teeth.

A nicely colored retroflexus from the Edisto river. I don't find many of these....
1 1/16" Isurus retroflexus   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus retroflexus
When you go out hunting teeth, you never know when you're going to find something incredible. This is one of those unexpected finds that I'll never forget. They pulled all kinds of debris out of the big ditch and piled it up on the edge. I had been looking in those piles just to see if anything washed out, and I found this right in a clump of pure Chandler Bridge. Its flawless in every way. A beautiful tooth!...
