This turned out to be the find of the day. Small teeth like this can be hard to positively ID when they're really stream worn. Fortunately there's enough enamel remaining to show the striations typical to mosasaur teeth.... |

This tooth was the fruit of the "just one more - the lightning isn't that close" method of screening. After finding it, I had to cut my time short due to a severe lightning storm that was approaching. It hit immediately after getting into my car - whew.... |

I held this in my gloved hand while I finished scanning the remainder of the gravel in my screen, not realizing what I had. Looking like a large crab claw I picked it out without looking at it closely, so I it wasn't until I was ready for the next screen that I realized it was a mosasaur tooth! (The fact it was 20 deg F and snowing didn't help my attention span either)... |
