1 1/8" Mako Shark Tooth
Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA - Isurus desori |
One of my favorite stream searching methods is screening the few pieces of gravel behind any submerged bowling ball sized object (or larger). There’s rarely more than one shovel full of gravel behind any such object, but the results can be good as was the case with this mako. It’s not the biggest tooth ever but the state of preservation is unbelievable.... |

On a great day of collecting, this was probably my best tooth overall.... |

1 3/4" Mako Shark Tooth
Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA - Isurus desori |
The fact that this tooth is missing a root lobe doesn't eat me up as much as wondering if it was whole before it ended up in my shovel. Minus the lobe, its perfect and probably would have had a 2" slant hight with an intact root. The break on the root looks very fresh. ERRRG!... |

1 5/16" Mako Shark Tooth
Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA - Isurus desori |
For all the pristine blades I find in this stream that are missing roots, this tooth had to have a beat up blade. Mako teeth this size are still uncommon in NJ, so I was still pretty happy!... |

2" Mako Shark Tooth
Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA - Isurus desori |
I found this tooth in the last screen of what was already a great day of collecting. When I pulled the screen out of the water, I immediately saw the root sticking straight out of the gravel, so I knew there had to be at least a partial blade attached. I just never imagined it would be as complete as it was!... |

This puppy was the one that kicked off all the good luck today. I was
looking closely at the gravel deposits at the creek bottom near where we
were digging when I spotted it. This is another tooth directly from the
Chandler Bridge - awesome preservation on this one!... |

2 1/6" Narrow-toothed Mako shark tooth
Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus desori |
I had all but given up hope on finding anything good at lunch today. I had walked for 45 minutes, and there was nothing great to show for my efforts, when I spied a root poking out of the mud. Yes, the day's redeeming tooth! It’s a bottom tooth with a fantastic root and blade. Look closely at the lingual (display) side photo at the right root lobe. There's this funky design on it. It almost looks like a rune! It's like, coolsville, daddio.... |

This is the best thing I found from a pond where I was the first digger. Its not a bad one. Its seen some wear, but all in all its nice. Its got nice color and a pretty good root. The blade is pretty sharp, too.... |
