Unearthing the Beached Whale

I’ve been real busy and haven’t had the chance to post right away. This weekend was BRFC’s hunt at Aurora. DW and Da Fossz arrived at my house to pick up my brother (officially known as brother $) and I. Then we were on our way to Aurora. We were riding through some heavy rain along the way. This is good news for the pit and increases the chances that new teeth will be exposed. I could only imagine the night before what collecting in the pit would be like the next day if we got the chance to hunt it.

The next day we arrive to the parking lot and the sun was showing for parts of the morning. When we received the okay to go into the pit I made a bee line towards the back end. I was picking up many teeth along the way. I had a whole hill of Yorktown deposits to myself. I carefully scanned the areas and noticed a whale tooth exposed on top. I decided this would be a good pile of Yorktown to poke through with my shovel. After scraping off some more of the layer I notice what looked like to be small rib bones at first. I looked at them a little closer and discovered that they were actually whale teeth.

Then immediately I was thinking there could be a whale skull here. I started to dig more carefully and kept uncovering whale teeth left and right. At one point there was a whole cluster of teeth laid out side by side. I wish I would have taken a photo of that one while they were still naturally in the ground. I dug until the deposit of Yorktown was depleted. In the end I pulled out an amazing total of 22 whale teeth. I am still in the process of prepping and cleaning them. I will post a photo of the set soon!
