Lee Creek Mako Shark Tooth
Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis |
|
|
This Lee Creek Mako shark tooth is tied for the largest of the species that I found on my most recent visit to the PCS mine. I wish I had taken a ground shot, but I found it in a particularly rich deposit of Yorktown formation and I was picking up 3 and 4 teeth at a time. Call me butter, I was on a roll. In my excitement, the camera didn't leave my pack. Don't blame me! What would you do if you saw teeth laying all over the place? Probabl... |

Pathologic Lee Creek Mako Shark Tooth

Many mako teeth are found at Lee Creek. Though very nice, I didn't notice anything special about this tooth until after I showed my finds to Pat Y. and I was on the bus, still in disbelief that I actually made it up the ramp after a hard day of collecting. I took this tooth out of my pouch and began scraping away the dirt from the blade with my thumbnail. I felt something hard, like limestone attached to the blade. On closer examination, it was actually what I can best describe as serra... |

Gigantic 3 1/16" Yorktown Mako Shark Tooth

When I found this tooth I definitely did a victory dance, which is dancing happily like a fool in circles around the tooth. I could tell it had to be at least 3 inches when I picked it up. The 2 15/16 inch mako I found in Summerville a few years ago had to step down from the throne. Now I have a new king to add to my mako collection that has earned his rightful place at 3 1/16 inches. ... |

This is the sweetest of all the makos I found at Lee Creek today and I found a lot of makos today, probably more than any other type of tooth even tiger shark teeth! Lots of other people had a lot of nice makos, too. I spent a lot of time in the Yorktown, but I crossed a lot of Pungo, too.
The hill of Yorktown I found this on had three rows of footprints when I arrived, but this was about 3 feet away from one of the trails that the person before me left. ... |
