Variety Pick

Today the weather was nice and the tides cooperated. I found a crab, a 5/8 inch thresher, a colorful mako and large lower snagletooth. I also found a piece I don't recognize, it has a pattern that looks similar to the edge of a ray plate but this appears too wide to be the edge portion and the back doesn't look like a ray plate. Any help would be appreciated.... |

Frozen Suds
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |
|
|
|
Hit the beach only to find it covered with up to a foot of Frozen suds. Where do frozen suds come from you might ask. Apparently they are occasionally leaked, in detergent form, from a water treatment plant upriver. The detergent in the water suds up in the wash zone and it was so cold that the bubbles froze Covering most of the exposed beach with psudo snow.
I did manage a nice Meg and makos with good color. I took some ground shots of some bones being exposed from the matrix. I don't ... |

A young friends bad day.
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |
|
|
|
Took a neighbor along today, young teenager, and the water was clear and low. I expected that we would do really well. However after the long hike to the end of the beach we barely had any teeth between the two of us. As we chatted our way back towards the car I saw him put his foot down right next to the big mako and keep walking. I was just glad he didn't step on it, I guess I should not have distracted him by talking. It is worn but my biggest mako to date. Several hundred yards up the ... |

Another windy trip, 4/11/2010
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |
|
|
|
Low tide was late in the afternoon and it was windy again. I took my neighbor
Justin along and we hit the beach around 3:30. As soon as we started up the beach another collector passed us heading in the other direction. At that point I thought, "bet he picked up the big ones" but we kept going out the beach anyway. Just 50 or so yards down the beach I noticed a flat surface just exposed in the sand. It ended up being a nice little meg with most of its serrations, my trip was m... |

Windy 2/28/2010
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |
|
|
|
After a long winter and too much snow I finally hit the beach and it was windy and dark. Low tide was real early so the start of the walk was in the dark. I did find my first teeth by flashlight, including a partial root of a meg. The megs are all river worn but I love them anyway. My favorite find is the little thresher, I rarely find them and I have yet to find a giant. The Isurus is my longest to date but is missing some enamel from the display side. Good hunting.... |

Upon ariving at the boat launch the water was great and the parking lot was empty. What a great day to find some nice teeth. As we prepared the boat for lauch, a jet ski from Pennsylvania pulled in. Could it be the Fossilguy? It had to be! Who else is on a jetski in late November. After a brief chat with guy and gal and a congats for her 6 inch meg from PCS we launched ... |

Did I find my brain?
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |

Is that a brain? The teeth were high on the beach today. I found a nice upper Mako 2.25 inches and a thick 2 inch lower. If anyone can identify the brain looking object that would be great. ... |

made a quick trip to meet some freinds who were camping. When we arrived the water was to rough to put the bat in so we waited until about 5:30 when the water was a little calmer. After a short boat ride we hit the beach at extremely low water levels. I think the wind really had a lot to do with it. we left around 8 and the tide was comming in. I didn't find a lot of teeth but did find a nice variety.

In the zone, the wash zone 1/3/2009
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |

Had a nice trip this weekend with some members of the phatfossils site and was able to walk one of my favorite beaches with them. The cool part about this site is that if the wind conditions are right you can be walking right on a lot of formation and that particular zone has a history of when you find something it can be associated.
Well, after blabbing on about how I was shocked that they had never found any associated remains in the beach clay I found some of the way... |

This post is from last week.
I went up to Northern Neck in search of a new beach and some teeth. I got there early, so I hit a few beaches I usually visit. I found a handfull of teeth, but nothing with much size to it. The tide was coming in and the day was slipping past so I went looking for a new spot to access the Potomac. I found a public boat landing and there was a decent amount of beach in each direct... |

I have been really busy as of late and have not had much time to go hunting. The few times I have been able to get out I was looking for new spots along the James. While kayaking down the river on the James City County side I did find a couple of new (to me) beaches that I am looking forward to checking out when I get the chance. The one thing I found while exploring a marsh was a shock that I was not prepared for. Slipping quietly down the creek enjoying the ... |

Super Bowl Sunday Finds
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |
|
|
|
On Super Bowl Sunday I went to a new area for me along the Potomac river in Virginia. The day started off slow until I found a 1 6/8" Snaggletooth. I went through a second mini dry spell then I came across the best 50 yard stretch of beach that I have ever encountered. Three whole Megs, the largest was 3 5/8" but river worn, and a nice white/peach Meg that was a 2" beauty. The story of this trip was all the big Mako teeth. 2 5/8" was the largest and four more over the 2"... |

A Weekend of OUCH!!
Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA |

Well, Paleoscan and I had this weekend on our calendars for months now - a fossil trip to the James River. With any luck we would visit numerous formation locality type sites and find some nice fossils.
Friday started with a trip along the shores of the Potomac River in Westmoreland, VA. Paleoscan traveled in style with the Sqaulicorax while I had to huff it around the rock wrap shores to get to the promising fossil beaches. Paleoscan was a righteous host and rowed all of the way up to the... |

My fossil collecting partner (Buddy the dog) and I went down to the Potomac in Westmoreland County VA where I have often found some fine teeth. We scaled down the cliff and began to work the gravel. Soon I found some nice hemis and the cetacean tooth. After walking a couple of miles we headed back working the surf and found some more nice but not exciting Miocene fossils. About 100 ft prior to scaling back up the cliff, I walked up to talus at the base of the cliff to relieve myself. As I was re... |
