A nice squalodon tooth - could be associated with a bunch I found in this same spot a few years ago....
Squalodon Molar   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
It's always a treat to find a squalodon tooth, especially a molar. The double root lobes are almost never intact, and even though these are snapped off at the tips, I would still call this a mostly complete tooth....
Fossil Squalodon Whale Tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

The enamel of this little squalodon whale tooth has incredible detail. I have found a lot of whale teeth hunting in the oligocene Chandler Bridge formation in Summerville, SC, but I have never found this position before. The enamel cap is fully serrated at looks like a molar, but the tooth has only a single root. Very bizarre - looks a bit like a torch!

Squalodon Whale Tooth   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

It’s amazing the root didn’t break off because it’s so thin. This is the best squalodon tooth I’ve found in a really long time!

Squalodon Molar   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This little gem was stuck to a rock at the base of the green lens of the ashley marl. I was surprised how complete it was since I found it by itself. Normally, the root lobes are more damaged when the tooth becomes disassociated from the skull....
Associated Squalodon Whale Teeth and Jaw Fragment   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
A very cool find from the bottom of the Edisto - associated squalodon teeth. I had a heck of a time getting these things out intact as the skull disintegrated around them. Most of the root lobes broke off, but I picked up as much as I could find....
1-3/16" squalodon tooth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

A fine Oligocene whale tooth harvested from the Chandler Bridge.

...
Squalodon Tooth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

Another whale tooth from the same section of the river.

...
Atlas Vertebra   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

This cool looking vertebra comes from immediately behind the skull. The occipital lobes of the skull rest on the flattened, wider bone near the sides.

Normally when you find one, there is a skull somewhere nearby.

Squalodon Molar   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
As far as I am concerned, it doesn't get any better than finding a quality double rooted squalodon molar. The detail in the enamel is fantastic....

1 1/2" Squalodon Molar
1 7/16" Squalodon Molar   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is the last of three squalodon molars I found in the same dive, and its by far the best of the three. I found it barely hanging onto the Chandler Bridge formation where it fossilized. The serrations are awesome to behold, and the detail in the enamel is unbelievably detailed. Even the fragile tips of the root lobes are intact, a feature rarely seen in teeth disarticulated from the skull....
1 5/16" Squalodon Molar   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is the second of three squalodon molars I found in one dive. I couldn't believe my luck at the point I found this one. These teeth are so rare to find, that its been almost a year since I've found a complete one. This one, unlike the first, is serrated....
1 1/2" Squalodon Molar   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This was the first of three awesome double rooted squalodon molars I found in one dive. Before I found this one, I was getting worried that my dive would end in failure, and I would have to hang my regulator in shame on the long dive home....
1 1/16" Squalodon Molar   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
It would be tough to find another squalodon molar this well preserved dis-articulated from the skull....

1" Squalodon Tooth
1 3/16" Squalodon Tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

3 5/8" Squalodon Incisor   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus

Here's another tooth from the set I've been lucky enough to put together from the ditch. This one came from higher in the Chandler Bridge, thus the difference in color.

Check out the whole set here

...
3 7/8" Squalodon Incisor Whale Tooth   Charleston County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is best whale tooth I've found to date. Incredible color and condition especially it being from the Wando layer where most are destroyed. I did knock off a small end of the root with my shovel, but I reattached it and it still looks fine....
3 1/4" Squalodon Molar   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
Check out the whole set here...
2 7/8" Squalodon Molar   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
A fantastic double rooted specimen! Check out the serrations on the enamel cap. unfortunately, the shovel hit the fragile root lobes when this tooth was extracted. You just never know when they're gonna be there! Luckily, most of the material was recovered.
Check out the whole set of teeth associated with this one here...

1 1/2" Squalodon Incisor   Charleston County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
A nice little whale tooth. The enamel is in great shape and the entire root is intact. Its tough to find these complete from the Wando formation. They are normally destroyed when they are reworked....
3 1/4" Squalodon Whale tooth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
I almost passed this beauty right by. I saw it out of the corner of my mask and I thought it was a bone fragment. There are lots of bones on the bottom in this spot, so I disregarded it and went on. Then it hit me that it could have been a whale tooth, so I swam back over. Sure enough, it was. And its in great shape, too....
1" Squalodon Molar   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
Whale teeth are scarce, and double rooters are the most rare. The ding on the root is minimal compared to the total coolness of this tooth!...
3 1/2" Squalodon Incisor   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
What a tooth! This is a magnificent specimen dug directly from the geologic layer where the previous owner of this tooth lost it 28 million years ago. It is so rare to find one in this fantastic condition. No damage to the enamel or root. If I had just found this one, my day would have been successful, but I found an associated specimen, too....
3" Squalodon Pre-Molar   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is almost as good as it gets when it comes to whale teeth. This is a tooth directly from the original layer where it was lost 28 million years ago, and it is in a remarkable state of preservation. If you look closely, you can see the serrations on it. Near the root end, you can see where the very ends were separated. Just one or two positions back from this in the animal's mouth, the teeth have double roots....
1" Squalodon Molar   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
These are among the coolest teeth - a prehistoric whale molar. I love the double root! This is from a juvenile whale....
3 1/2" Squalodon tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is a fantastic specimen from an extinct whale. They are seldom found with the root intact....
3 1/4" Squalodon incisor   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is the front tooth from a squalodon in a nearly perfect state of preservation....
3 1/2" Squalodon Tooth   Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA - Squalodon atlanticus
This is a tooth from toward the front of the whale's mouth, but not an incisor....
