Lee Creek Mako Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

This Lee Creek Mako shark tooth is tied for the largest of the species that I found on my most recent visit to the PCS mine. I wish I had taken a ground shot, but I found it in a particularly rich deposit of Yorktown formation and I was picking up 3 and 4 teeth at a time. Call me butter, I was on a roll. Pathologic Lee Creek Mako Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

Many mako teeth are found at Lee Creek. Though very nice, I didn't notice anything special about this tooth until after I showed my finds to Pat Y. and I was on the bus, still in disbelief that I actually made it up the ramp after a hard day of collecting. I took this tooth out of my pouch and began scraping away the dirt from the blade with my thumbnail. I felt something hard, like limestone attached to the blade. On closer examination, it was actually what I can best describe as serra...

Gigantic 3 1/16" Yorktown Mako Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

When I found this tooth I definitely did a victory dance, which is dancing happily like a fool in circles around the tooth. I could tell it had to be at least 3 inches when I picked it up. The 2 15/16 inch mako I found in Summerville a few years ago had to step down from the throne. Now I have a new king to add to my mako collection that has earned his rightful place at 3 1/16 inches.

...

Yorktown Mako Shark Tooth   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

A monster of a tooth that's really sharp. No ground shot because I found this on a steep edge and I couldn't get a good shot. I picked this up with my new rake to avoid tumbling down the edge of the pile in to the water.

Lee Creek Yorktown Mako   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

This is the sweetest of all the makos I found at Lee Creek today and I found a lot of makos today, probably more than any other type of tooth even tiger shark teeth! Lots of other people had a lot of nice makos, too. I spent a lot of time in the Yorktown, but I crossed a lot of Pungo, too.

The hill of Yorktown I found this on had three rows of footprints when I arrived, but this was about 3 feet away from one of the trails that the person before me left.

Mako Shark Tooth
Before and After Cleaning.   North Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis

I used to think using more than water and a toothbrush would spoil a fossil tooth. I was the one spoiled, by teeth that were wonderfully preserved and without mineral deposits. Now I know better and don't feel bad at all about freeing a tooth from mineral encrustations.

Fossil Isurus hastalis (Broad Toothed Mako) Shark Tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis
Hands down, this is the best preserved Mako I've found in nearly 20 years of hunting for shark teeth at land sites in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I can't say enough! Its got killer color, its big, the edges are so sharp I literally cut paper with them. And that root is virtually unblemished. Fossilguy was right next to me when I found this gem. Its amazing to find something this well preserved in the reformulated Hawthorne layer. Its so well preserved that it looks like its Chilean....
Fossil Mako Shark Tooth   Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Isurus hastalis
When I got this puppy home, the first thing I did was measure it. I tracked sand and mud all over the house in my impatience. It turned out to be 2 7/8 inches! Almost!!! How could I be disappointed with this tooth, though? Its massive, its complete, its got great color. Most of the makos we find in Summerville had severe root rot or no root at all. This is a centerpiece of the Isurus hastalis collection!...
