Back in the water again!   Peace River, Florida, USA

It had been a long time since I hit the Peace River to do some snorkeling for fossils. The spot I had been to previously required a boat to get to and I had my girlfriend and another friend and his kids in tow with no boats so we opted for the usual Old Faithful spot near Wauchula. The river was a little too high and too murky to snorkel so I opted instead to use the screen. I used my new Go Pro Hero 2 video camera on a head-mount t...

It Will Rain   Peace River, Florida, USA
Last week, I made my first trip to the famous Peace river. I have an apartment in West Palm Beach so it was a 3 hour drive across the state. Our reservations for a guide was cancelled, so we were going into "uncharted territory". We finally reach our destination (Crews Creek I think). My dad sprints to what he claims was the "worst bathroom ever created". I quickly found a small rib frag which confirmed my thought that this part of the river fossilivourous. Af...
A Mammoth good hunt!   Peace River, Florida, USA
Fossil fever has been high for me these past couple months. I am always looking for a good opportunity to get back to the river. However, the summer rains have started to pick up and with it the water level on the Peace River. I had made plans to hit the river via kayak with one of my kayaking buddies when the level was low but by the time we were actually able to go it had risen almost two feet. I had no clue whether the hunting conditions would be good so I resigned myself to the idea that the...
A fraglodon by any other name...   Peace River, Florida, USA
Is still a fraglodon but counts as a fossil in the pouch!

The brief rains from last week managed to subside long enough for the water level at my usual site on the Peace River to come down for a Saturday fossil hunt. Unfortunately for the underwater video quality, the river was more murky than it had been the previous week. I don't know if the rain stirred things up or not. One thing I do know is that after about an hour or so of snorkeling and fanning I was rousted from the ...
first trip to Peace River   Peace River, Florida, USA
So when we decided a few months ago to go to Florida for vacation, I knew I had to get to the Peace River for at least one day.  Though I had been fossil hunting in Florida before, this was my first ever trip to the Peace River and so I was pretty excited.  Instead of fumbling around and wasting time finding a spot, we decided to book a trip with Mark Renz/Megalodon Expeditions.  It was a great time and I really enjoyed meeting Mark. &...
I made it by the skin of my teeth   Peace River, Florida, USA
I had been watching the water levels in the Peace River all week. Even with a couple decent rain showers during the week the level remained doable for some snorkeling. I got up and got my gear together and packed a cooler and then headed out for my coffee before heading over to the river. The weather looked gorgeous. Nice and sunny and perfect for lighting up the bottom for some fanning.

I got the car parked and got all of my stuff together and made my way over to the water. T...
Nothing Like Making a New Fossil Hunting Buddy   Peace River, Florida, USA
With the previous day's last find fresh in my mind, and a few extra aches and pains on my frame, I eased out of bed to face the start of another potentially glorious fossil hunting day. It didn't take me long to get myself together and my gear and a cooler packed into the car. The sky was looking a little overcast as I made my way out of the driveway and over to get my morning brew. It really didn't look that bad and I didn't think that it was supposed to rain so I decided to stick it out and ma...
A Tiny but Pleasant Surprise   Peace River, Florida, USA
I was having serious fossil hunting withdrawals during the week and it was all I could do to keep from going nuts waiting for the weekend to arrive so that I could hit the river. Thank goodness for YouTube! Watching fossil hunting video helped take the edge off a but but it also helped fuel the desire for big sharks' teeth even more.

I got up Saturday morning and got online to check the Peace River water level and it was still at a good level. I packed my gear and my cooler a...
Couldn't stay away from the Peace River   Peace River, Florida, USA
After such a great hunt the weekend before with my buddy, I decided that I would try heading over to the Peace River again. I wanted to be able to take decent photos and not worry about dunking my camera so I found and bought an inexpensive underwater camera. From some of the test shots I took at home I knew it would work well. The next question would be whether it would work well underwater. By Sunday I was ready to hit the river so I packed all of my gear and headed down. The weather cooperate...
My first trip to the Peace River this year   Peace River, Florida, USA
I had spoken with a good friend of mine about the possibility of taking a Saturday trip down to the Peace River for some fossil hunting. My friend, Dan, has two daughters that are science nuts and love collecting fossils. His youngest is crazy about fossils and geology in general so I knew that they would enjoy getting out. In the past I had provided all of the equipment for screening but since this could be a regular thing I gave my buddy some instructions on how to build screens for his family...
Brownville Redeux   Peace River, Florida, USA
Similar results. A beautiful place with lots of ity bity teeny tiny teeth. Eyes still hurt. Hoping for a more interesting trip soon....
Peace River 3/28/09   Peace River, Florida, USA

We went out on a half day trip using the Caone Outposts Oak Hill Run.  We found the river loaded with canoes and Tropical Storm wind gusts for the entire trip.  The fossil beds we hunted did produce small teeth. Our last stop just below the rail road bridge did produce some nice size teeth.  The river traffic at that location was not fossil hunting friendly.  Over all it was a hard working fossil huinting day.  Better than any day ...

Nov 08 trip report.   Peace River, Florida, USA

This post is for a trip in November of 2008.  We hit the river and headed up North from the Arcadia boat ramp.  This was a very warm day with many gators seen on the banks. With our first stop in the old honey we found a few nice finds.

Old trip to report on the Peace River.   Peace River, Florida, USA

Florida Family Fosslin' Fun   Peace River, Florida, USA

As my four year old son grows to assume his spot at the top of the food chain I feel compelled to take him deeper into the wild. Hs building instinct to hunt and gather (and fill his shark tooth jar) has begun to outweigh my fear of him becoming prey. His only fossil hunting experience thus far has been limited to the beach at the Peace River Campground where he routinely "racks" the tiny teeth that only his relatively new eyes can pick out in the phosphate speckled sand. The ...

Spring Break Peace River Trip   Peace River, Florida, USA

Having a need for a fossil fix and the need for some camping time we were able as a family get both in for 4 days of fun at the Brownville county park, on the Peace River.  We set up camp and hit the river.  A path leads from the camp ground to the river and a huge fossil bed.  We started that day with my older son picking up a nice horse tooth right off a pile someone had just left.  Numerous small teeth were also picked up.  The ...

S = ∫(tj, tj+1) dt L(x(t), ∂x(t)/∂t)   Peace River, Florida, USA

I had an opportunity for a Florida fossilin’ trip and gave RivrDigr the call. Well, he was bountiful with fosspitality, and he dialed up another river trip on the Peace. We hit two spots on this day, and a sifting marathon was in order. We suited up for a cool dip in the river and quickly hit the fossil beds. The first spot had some other collectors and we both found quite a few punies along with a fraglodon. After a short...

Peace River 12/02/2007   Peace River, Florida, USA

Well the weather this summer did not produce the normal rain fall that Florida is known for.  This leads to drought conditions that we soon will face.  It also leads to some amazing fossil hunting for this time of year.  The Peace river at the Arcidia boat ramp is about two and a half feet below normal!!!!!!!!

I went on my first solo trip an...

Peace River July 07 shark tooth collection.   Peace River, Florida, USA

Here is a pic of the shark teeth that we found just in July 07 on the river.  I also have horse teeth and other fossils that I need to get on line with.

Mammoth Tooth sections   Peace River, Florida, USA

So my older son Stephen finds his frist nice "big" Peace River MEG.  Now I have a 7 year old boy mad that he does not have one.  On the next scoop of river bottom I hit something big.  The section almost fell off the sifter and back in but Tanner was not letting that catch go!  So two boys are showing off ther finds, 1 MEG tooth and 1 Mammoth tooth. They were both able to come home with both after a great quick day on the...

Peace River July MEGS   Peace River, Florida, USA

This was our 4th trip on the river.  We found area just behind a outcroping of old limestone sea floor bed.  Three other nice MEGS went to the neighbor and his son that same day.  Two mammoth tooth sections were also found in the same area.

shiver me timbers   Peace River, Florida, USA
The day of this trip was Super Bowl Sunday. I figured it would be a good day to head up river. The weather was on the cool side, mostly cloudy and very windy. I thought I would be alright with just my skin suit and a flannel. Well I was wrong, I was shivering from the time I got in the river untill I got back in my truck.   I toughed it out for about 3 hrs before I quit, the wind was just relentless.I think this was one of my shortest trips on the river.

Hard life.   Peace River, Florida, USA
As we collect fossils we sometimes forget that they are the remains of animals that probably survived a lot of hard times before they finally died. We sometimes get a glimpse into what they had to endure, in the way of predators and environment, through examining the damage to their bones. The most obvious signs of predation is by the marks, and punctures, left behind by teeth. Another sign is of healed injuries. Not all attacks by predators are lethal. And not all broken bones are from pre...
A Horse Tale   Peace River, Florida, USA
My buddy Chuck called me up the other day and said he had found a new spot on the river, it was a large area with tons of gravel that looked almost untouched. I haven't had a day off during the week to go fossilin since my trip to C.A. , so I was ready to move some serious gravel with Chuck, he's quite the digging machine. In fact I think that will be his new nickname "dign machine". Since he already had his canoe loaded up from the previous day, I headed over to his house in the morning and we h...
Peace River gold   Peace River, Florida, USA
I dug up a few more photos from the site on the Peace River. One of the photos shows the packed fossils under foot. No need for a shovel here!...
Paleo detective.   Peace River, Florida, USA
This trip is about a mystery. A story of fossils lost, and then found. It started when I lived in Florida a few years back. I had temporarily moved in with my parents to help out while my mother recovered from an illness. After a few months I read about a local fossil club and decided to check it out. With one TV in the house, and a father in control of the remote control, I was desperate to find some sort of entertainment. The meeting was enough to spark my collecting spirit again. At first...
Peace Be With You   Peace River, Florida, USA

About a month or so ago, RivrDigr emailed the BRFC brotherhood to see if we were interested into a trip into one of the Bone Valley mines. After some bargaining with a higher power, I was given the green light. To make a better trip of it, he also invited us to go to the Peace River on Saturday and Sunday before the quarry trip. Da f0ssZ, t$, and I hooked up at my crib and headed southward Friday. 9 hours later and one Taco Bell feast later, we checked into our hotel with High hopes.

Peace Be With You   Peace River, Florida, USA
After making a couple of trips to South Carolina it was my turn to return some fossipality. My local club got a chance to collect in one of the phosphate mines here in Florida, which is a rare occasion since most mines want nothing to do with fossil clubs. After sending a few emails I was able to get DW,DF,T$ & R_S and friends talked into coming down to Florida for the weekend. The mine trip wasn't until Monday, so with a whole weekend to kill I decided to show them around the Peace. The firs...
Peace Be With You   Peace River, Florida, USA
The first day at the river I met GMan, GWoman, and Chuck for the first time. Everyone around me was scoring nice megs, but me. Bad luck I suppose, but I did find a large hemipristis and lots of little teeth. The second day I met Rock Splitter, his mom, and girlfriend. This time I found a lot more megs and a nice posterior too. I noticed a fossil in my screen that I thought was just a turtle shell and I ALMOST threw it back into the river. Later on that day DW and Da f0ssZ identified the fo...
Peace Be With You   Peace River, Florida, USA
DW shot me an email letting me know that he, DF, and T$ were heading to Florida. He said they were gonna spend some time working the Peace, so I quickly responded saying that GwOman and myself would be down for a fossil fest. We left Club Greg early in the AM, drove the two hours to the landing, and met at the river at 7:45. We quickly loaded up the canoes, and headed to a spot up stream. There were only two canoes, and to get us all up there, RiverDigger needed to make two trips. We apprec...
This weekends expedition   Peace River, Florida, USA
We had some fair weather and some low water, so we decided to brake out the screens and shovels and head up river. The water still isn't clear enough for diving, vis is less than 8". But with the low water we are bound to get something good. Two days screening on the river can sure ware you out. We found some good stuff, Iv'e got a awesome 3 toed horse ,but I dropped it somewhere on my front lawn. ( I will find it !)I'm happy with the divesity and if the rain holds off , I'm going try to go ...
February 16 Peace trip   Peace River, Florida, USA
I woke up this morning feeling like I was coming down cold, so I decided that I can either stay home and feel sick or go screen sifting on the River and feel sick. So I choose the latter. I only stayed for a couple hours, but I did ok. 1 nice shamer , a mix of smaller teeth, a barracuda tooth and a big ol' alligator scute....
All work and no play   Peace River, Florida, USA
I took the day off work to try out some new dive equipment. A 100 cu. ft. steel tank and a light cannon HID dive light. The dive light definately came in handy with vis only being about 12". Picked up a few things, a almost whole mammoth tooth, a nice horse tooth, a couple megs and a few other small teeth....
Lost and found   Peace River, Florida, USA
We decided to go up river Sunday after taking a break from fossiling for the holidays and the fact that the 3" of rain on Christmas brought the river up about 3'. We went back to the spot where I scored a nice point a few weeks earlier . No points this week, but we found a good variety other stuff. 1 decent 1-3/4 meg, several nice Hemi's, Tigers, Horse, Tapir, Alligator, Turtoise, Bison and a couple of plates from a Mammoth tooth. Now for the lost. We returned to my truck find that someone had ...
Back to the Peace   Peace River, Florida, USA
The river level is finally subsiding after this summers record flooding and huricanes. Needs to drop another foot to be perfect for screening. We decided to hit a spot that last year was an island, this year one side has completetly filled in with sand and gravel. Not a bad day, a good variety of teeth and a nice point....
