Last week, I made my first trip to the famous Peace river. I have an apartment in West Palm Beach so it was a 3 hour drive across the state. Our reservations for a guide was cancelled, so we were going into "uncharted territory".
We finally reach our destination (Crews Creek I think). My dad sprints to what he claims was the "worst bathroom ever created". I quickly found a small rib frag which confirmed my thought that this part of the river fossilivourous.

Fossil fever has been high for me these past couple months. I am always looking for a good opportunity to get back to the river. However, the summer rains have started to pick up and with it the water level on the Peace River. I had been watching the water levels in the Peace River all week. Even with a couple decent rain showers during the week the level remained doable for some snorkeling. I got up and got my gear together and packed a cooler and then headed out for my coffee before heading over to the river. The weather looked gorgeous. Nice and sunny and perfect for lighting up the bottom for some fanning.

I was having serious fossil hunting withdrawals during the week and it was all I could do to keep from going nuts waiting for the weekend to arrive so that I could hit the river. After such a great hunt the weekend before with my buddy, I decided that I would try heading over to the Peace River again. I wanted to be able to take decent photos and not worry about dunking my camera so I found and bought an inexpensive underwater camera. I had spoken with a good friend of mine about the possibility of taking a Saturday trip down to the Peace River for some fossil hunting. My friend, Dan, has two daughters that are science nuts and love collecting fossils. His youngest is crazy about fossils and geology in general so I knew that they would enjoy getting out. We went out on a half day trip using the Caone Outposts Oak Hill Run. We found the river loaded with canoes and Tropical Storm wind gusts for the entire trip. The fossil beds we hunted did produce small teeth. Our last stop just below the rail road bridge did produce some nice size teeth. The river traffic at that location was not fossil hunting friendly. Over all it was a hard working fossil huinting day. Better than any day ... |

As my four year old son grows to assume his spot at the top of the food chain I feel compelled to take him deeper into the wild. Hs building instinct to hunt and gather (and fill his shark tooth jar) has begun to outweigh my fear of him becoming prey. Well the weather this summer did not produce the normal rain fall that Florida is known for. This leads to drought conditions that we soon will face. The day of this trip was Super Bowl Sunday. I figured it would be a good day to head up river. The weather was on the cool side, mostly cloudy and very windy. I thought I would be alright with just my skin suit and a flannel. Well I was wrong, I was shivering from the time I got in the river untill I got back in my truck. I toughed it out for about 3 hrs before I quit, the wind was just relentless.I think this was one of my shortest trips on the river.

About a month or so ago, RivrDigr emailed the BRFC brotherhood to see if we were interested into a trip into one of the Bone Valley mines. After some bargaining with a higher power, I was given the green light. To make a better trip of it, he also invited us to go to the Peace River on Saturday and Sunday before the quarry trip. After making a couple of trips to South Carolina it was my turn to return some fossipality. My local club got a chance to collect in one of the phosphate mines here in Florida, which is a rare occasion since most mines want nothing to do with fossil clubs. After sending a few emails I was able to get DW,DF,T$ & R_S and friends talked into coming down to Florida for the weekend. The first day at the river I met GMan, GWoman, and Chuck for the first time. Everyone around me was scoring nice megs, but me. Bad luck I suppose, but I did find a large hemipristis and lots of little teeth. The second day I met Rock Splitter, his mom, and girlfriend. DW shot me an email letting me know that he, DF, and T$ were heading to Florida. He said they were gonna spend some time working the Peace, so I quickly responded saying that GwOman and myself would be down for a fossil fest. We had some fair weather and some low water, so we decided to brake out the screens and shovels and head up river. The water still isn't clear enough for diving, vis is less than 8". But with the low water we are bound to get something good. Two days screening on the river can sure ware you out.
We found some good stuff, Iv'e got a awesome 3 toed horse ,but I dropped it somewhere on my front lawn. ( I will find it !)I'm happy with the divesity and

I woke up this morning feeling like I was coming down cold, so I decided that I can either stay home and feel sick or go screen sifting on the River and feel sick. So I choose the latter. I only stayed for a couple hours, but I did ok.

I took the day off work to try out some new dive equipment. A 100 cu. ft. steel tank and a light cannon HID dive light. The dive light definately came in handy with vis only being about 12". Picked up a few things, a almost whole mammoth tooth, a nice horse tooth, a couple megs and a few other small teeth.... |

We decided to go up river Sunday after taking a break from fossiling for the holidays and the fact that the 3" of rain on Christmas brought the river up about 3'. We went back to the spot where I scored a nice point a few weeks earlier . No points this week, but we found a good variety other stuff. 1 decent 1-3/4 meg,several nice Hemi's, Tigers, Horse, Tapir, Alligator, Turtoise,

The river level is finally subsiding after this summers record flooding and huricanes. Needs to drop another foot to be perfect for screening. We decided to hit a spot that last year was an island, this year one side has completetly filled in with sand and gravel. Not a bad day, a good variety of teeth and a nice point.... |
