Aurora Fossil Festival 2013   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum, so I hope you enjoy it! I left the house around 8 and arrived at the festival around 11:30. It was a great day with a nice temperature. I met my friend Zachj there and we surface collected the parking lot all day long. There were teeth everywhere! I used knee pads and just crawled all over the material picking up one tooth after the other.  There were so many I couldn't f...
Fossil Festival 2010   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
I really didn’t consider that our 6 hours, or so, of sifting in the spoil piles at this year’s Aurora Fossil Festival yielded impressive enough specimens to warrant a Trip Report.
(Same for our two trips over to GMR…) :(
However, I finally caved to my desire to take a few photos…

We arrived in Aurora at around 9:00AM on Thursday before the Festival. We drove past the museum, and noted that there were 3 “excavators” over ...
Back in Aurora !   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Day 4 – Saturday
We leave Jacksonville at around 5:30AM, and arrive shortly before 7:00AM. We are the only people there, which is just the way it should be ! ;)
We start out with some surface collecting, but just not seeing much, at all, so we return to the back lot. Mike was there around the time these piles were delivered, so we know that they are only, like, 3 weeks old.
The museu...

Hunting at Aurora…well almost!

Inclimate weather is not always a bad thing!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

This weekend my sister was passing through the area and we made some plans to do some fossil hunting.  So on Friday I drove up to Greenville by way of Aurora to see what there was to be seen.  I finally got there after sitting in traffic which turned an hour and a half drive into nearly three hours so I already wasn’t in a good mood and when I looked around I didn’t feel like digging so I just surface collected.  And of course I didn’t see anything really just...

D-Day Fossil Hunting   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
June 6, 1944 Allied troops carried out a well planned invasion of Hitlers "Fortress Europe".  55 years later I made plans to meet Govinn at the spoil piles in Aurora to begin a weekend fossil hunting trip.  Half the fun is finding the teeth and identifying them, the other half is trying to come up with interesting trip report titles!  Ok just kidding.  Actually until now I didnt even realize that June 6th was the day...
Digging in the dirt......   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
digging in the piles   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
So we made it down for the festival and we had a blast, ran into a ton of people i have met and some new faces but most of the time we were busy digging away at the piles. We came away with a few goodies for 2 days of work. I would have to say that sunday was better than saturday but they were about even, we found more partial megs on day 2 and we had less people in our way so we were able to get more done. I think i met a few people while digging im not sure but they seemed to know me from br...

speechless   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

It almost didn't happen more time then I'll be able to write on this post. My car has been enduring engine problems for almost a month now, THANK GOD for my mother allowing me to take her personal vehicle to North Carolina for the weekend. I arrived @ 2am Saturday morning and crashed out in the hotel room. Saturday was a blast, there were way more people at the festival this year. A big reason was the weather, beautiful and sunny. I finally got a chance to meet mikeDoB and a few other p...

May 9, 2009 My first PCS Experience   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Before I start off on my report, I want to thank the PCS Phosphate Company and Curtis Ormond for the opportunity given to me to collect at the mine. I also want to say thank you to all of the guides for their dedication, sharing of knowledge, kindness, and everything else they do to help newbies like me stumble about the mine. I met several forum members and they are all very nice folks, looking forward to seeing y'all again.

My plan was to arri...

First trip into lee creek   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
years ago I saw fossils being brought out of a mine located in north Carolina, big legs and rare teeth were just a few things that drew my attention to the place that many call lee creek. There was one little problem, I had to be 18 to get in. So I waited and let the years pass watching meg after meg pulled out of the fossil rich dirt that is in the mine. Well on April 18, 2009 I turned 18 years of age and I would have the chance to hunt the mine.

I began to count down th...
First trip into the Fossil Holy Land, Lee Creek Mine!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

MEGLESS   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Ahh what I've been waiting for a day in lee Creek. (4/11/09)-  I'm now working in Northern VA so I thought I was going to get a jump start on the trip.....NOT EVEN. It took me two hours to get from (95/495) to  Fredericksburg.  The GPS gave me an average speed of 10.6 mph. The picture is the horrific traffic on 95 S. I think it really shows my boredom level.

Another first time trip to PCS Lee Creek Mine   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

The day finally arrived. My hunting pardners, Sharkdentist and Ozzy Rules shared the excitement of being here for the first time. The view from the top of the ramp is awesome. Now the work begins, where to start looking in a landscape that looks like a small version of the Rocky Mountains.

After walking and looking, I began to get an idea to what was Yorktown and Pungo. A small Alopias latidens was one of my first teeth , soon after a nic...

Whale of a goodtime   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
My first trip to aurora " Lee Creek " was awesome after meeting up with SvilleJ in Summervillle S.C it was off to Lumberton N.C to pick up Ozzurules. Around 5 am we arrived at PCS to maybe catch some sleep before entering the mine. At 8 am right on time we were briefed and on the bus headed into the mine. After a hour or so with not much to show but some small teeth I stopped to speak Ms. Young a very nice guide for PCS after a brief conversation it was back to hunting again as I moved...
First ever trip into the pit...now with pics 4-15-09   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

My first ever trip into the pit happened last sat. I got to hang with govinn and he led the way. Up and down alot as we searched for the BIG one. Well we searched and I think the big one decided to hide that day. I can say I had a great time . As we got back to ride the bus at 2 (first in first out) the bus was loaded and ready to go , so we got to return to the pit for another hour to continue our hunt. But even with "extra" time still nothing . I did find...

Houston, the Eagle has landed....   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I took the day off on Friday (27th of April) to hit the GMR before the virgin trip to Lee Creek the following day.  The late morning weather was becoming clearer the further east I traveled with some sun poking out as I passed Raleigh.   Then as soon as I crossed Interstate 95, the gloom and doom started to show its u...

Unearthing the Beached Whale   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

4/4/09 My first trip into the mine.   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

First off I would like to thank PCS for giving us the opportunity to hunt at the mine.

Thanks to the guides and the museum for their help and support.  This was my first time into the mine and all I can say is wow. I had so much ...

Have it your way   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

With some good fortune the BRFC trip to PCS was not only on, but served with a side order of rain. I headed down to Summerville to meet up with BRFC-ers DW, the brothers “K”, or BK for short. We managed to dodge tornadoes but still a wild ride up to Washington. The day was cloudy but with rain earlier in the week, it was on!! I headed out and started walking toward promising hills…I found nice exposures of Pung-town and Yo...

Black River Fossils Lee Creek Collecting Trip Spring 2009   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I descended the ramp with a huge grin. All our guys could hunt! 8 Black River Fossils members met up to flex our collecting muscles, but up until about an hour before, I wasn't even sure we would be allowed access. Saturday was Black River Fossils' day to hunt the PCS mine, and fate had once again given us optimum collecting conditions. When you get your date, you never know what's going to happen. Some dates get cancelled. Others go in, but without the rain necessary to expose the foss...

whirlwind NC weekend   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Greenville for a couple hours on Saturday after the long drive from NJ. It was completely backed up due to the near flood stage Tar River into which it drains. Downstream areas were quite stagnant and not appealing to fossil collecting. Met fossils4us and was very impressed with the SS1000! Definitely a top-notch construction for bulk sampling. Conditions at PCS on Sunday were amazing, around 80F with a nice breeze. I didn't even get too much sunburn. Quite a change from NJ this time of year and...
And then came the rain!!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

First I would like to thank Curtis Ormond, the guides and all the other people who help make collecting at this site a possibility. Without them we would never have the chance to enter the mine and collect such wonderful fossils. Thank You!!
The day started out raining but not too cold. The view from the top of the ramp took my breath away...the collecting area is huge!!!! As I walked into the mine I saw hill after hill of great looking Yorktown and Pungo. The area h...

Confessions of an Adult who plays in Mud Puddles!?!?   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
After my "Great Success" the Sunday before in the GMR, I was ready to spend a whole weekend trying to find another big GW.  So "EARLY" Saturday morning I packed up my gear, threw it in the car and started driving up to Greenville.  Just like the previous Sunday it had already started lightly raining on the way up but that didn’t deter me.  By the time I got up to Greenville the rain had gone from light to downpour.&...
Singning in the Rain on opening day in Aurora, NC AKA Lee Creek   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
The day started off with everyone meeting in the contractors parking lot to a wet and gloomy day. Everyone in anticipation of whether or not if the hunt was still on. Then the word came in that the bus that takes us into the mine broke down on the way to get us. But thankfully Curtis Ormand came to the rescue with another bus and a couple of vans. THANK YOU CURTIS!!! And thanks to all the guides for for all there hard work and dedication. With out them there wouldnt be a hunting season in Aurora...
Leee Creek and the green turtle mojo   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Before leaving on my trip to Lee Creek this season , my 8 year old daughter gave me one of her stuffed animals as a good luck charm. I told her I'd take it with in the mine , I wasn't going to pass up some extra mojo.
It was one of the most sloppiest and coldest days of collecting I've had. When its raining the teeth are harder to see, everything just blends into grayish dirt.  I walked to the far end of the mine near the drag line. The material in that area looks like it...
The Name Game   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

We left sunny Summerville, South Carolina on a warm, breezy, beautiful Friday afternoon. Our destination was the Lee Creek mine at the PCS Phosphate quarry in Aurora, North Carolina for the opening day of the spring 2009 fossil collecting season. Long time fossil pal T$ was with me, as was my long time wife.  T$ loves collecting teeth, so its no surprised that he was excited to be going. My wife, after a 5 year collecting hiatus, finally agreed that she would try collecting at ...

My travels through time…Day 4 the Miocene   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

We had originally planned on hitting Green Mill Run but with all the rain figured it would be way too high to be productive so we hunted the plies of Miocene Pungo at the Aurora Museum. We were in luck they had just dumped fresh material and only a...

2008 Fall Season - PCS Aurora “Lee Creek” Bounty – Making a living off of other peoples trash   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Fall 2008 PCS Aurora “Lee Creek” Bounty – Making a living off of other peoples trash

This is a composite of just the best of the Fall’s season haul. I’ve been very lucky lately with finds at the mine and this season was no exception. The weather over these days ranged from cool and a breeze to near ungodly heat and humidity. That’s the way it goes in early Fall in the south.

Last season I found a hunk of gomptherium tusk that someone ...
meg challenged   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
I'm a little late on my Aurora trip report here now that the season has been cancelled, but here goes. I remain meg challenged in the mine, but I managed to make a few interesting finds including a great pungo croc tooth and a seal jaw segment with molar. Unfortunately the seal tooth has some damage including a stress fracture right down the middle but it is mostly intact so I am very happy with that since it is the first seal tooth in my collection. Thanks to PCS and the friends group for ...
My toothing bags are no longer empty.   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I haven’t been out toothing much because of college and studying all the time. I was excited about this upcoming trip and more than ready to take a break from school to hunt teeth! This trip turned out to be another fun road-trip to Aurora&...

Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore ...   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I had fun this past weekend on Sat (Day 3) collecting in the mine.  I was really excited when I heard that the area had received over 3 inches of rain earlier in the week.  That meant the old footprints from the first weekend would be washed away, and new fossils exposed!  Well, I'm not so sure that was the end result.  I covered an aweful lot of territory, stopping frequently at what looked like really awesome Pungo hills which normally have loads of smal...

Southern Exposure   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Summer seems to speed by until you hear that your fossil hunt date at the PCS Phosphate Mine has been announced. Well the weekend arrived for the hunt and I joined T$ and Ditchweezil for a more economically sensible trip.

And this bag was, like, dancing with me...   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I arrived at the Aurora Fossil Museum last Wednesday to find that the weather was starting to take a turn for the worse.  The forecast was for 40% chance for rain with very windy conditions from a tropical low system that was sitting off the coast.   The clouds were looking ugly and the winds were picking up.  I quickly toured the museum, got a Lincoln’s worth of tickets for the 2009 Memorial Day Fossil Festival’s “MEG” tooth raffle and then ...

Opening Day in Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I had hi hopes for this day with all the rain that we got the few days prior to the hunt.  As we made our way down the ramp it was on.  I said to myself i was going to make it all the way out to the farthest corner where not to many people make it to.  I got about 3/4 of the way out and couldnt help myself anymore i had to stop and look.  It wasnt until about 10:00 that i found my first meg.  I was off to a good start.  Me 1 Wife 0&a...

My Friend the Weed   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Its Fall, and I've been anticipating the Lee Creek fossil hunt since I stepped out of the pit last season. There was a sub tropical storm the day before the big hunt that really got me worried. Too much rain in Aurora is bad because if it washes out the ramp, collecting is cancelled. T$, da f0ssZ, and myself made the trek without knowing for sure whether we would be allowed access to the pit, but the prospect of collecting after that much rainfall was too good to pass up. Despite severa...

Living a Charmed Life   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

The post festival fossil hunt is always fun, but the weather can sometimes be brutal.  The temps this time were very reasonable for being nearly June.  The 'competition' for the hunt spots is getting more extreme every year but luckily for me I made the list again this year.  Nobody had hunted the area for a few weeks and there was lots of rain so it was pretty promising.  I realized on the way to the parking lot that I left my camera in th...

Fossil Festival Trip   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I first want to thank PCS and all the other people who help make hunts like this possible!

The weekend started out great when I found my first White Tip Reef Shark tooth on one of the spoil piles in town! But the best was yet to come. On Sunday I was lucky enough to be able to hunt in the mine. With all the rain and less than normal pressure this year I had hight hopes. I started out with intentions of hunting the area I had found my Parotodus ...

Aurora Fossil Fest Hunt   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

It’s been a long time since we have made a post, all due to working up at the museum getting it ready for the fossils festival.  Now we will have a lot more time to get all our trips in.  So I guess we will start with the special festival hunt.&...

Finally got "The Big One"   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Saturday was the world famous fossil festival down in aurora, North Carolina. I spent most of the day talking to people and preventing children from throwing the Calvert Cliffs displays off the table. I also found a 500 little teeth in the pungo reject material.(The largest being a pretty 1 5/8 mako. Skinny with a bent tip. Ill try to get the picture up later). Anyway there was a little scare in the morning when we weren't sure in CMMFC was on the list to go in. All was well and we bo...
Ramp is Dutch for Disaster   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Anyone who hunts at Lee Creek knows that fossil collecting there is completely at the mercy of the weather for a variety of reasons. Heavy rain is our best friend and worst enemy. It exposes fresh fossils, but at the same time, has the possibility to destroy the only entrance to the pit. Up until the day before last Satuday, everyone scheduled was sitting on the edge of their seats as we awaited word whether the ramp, destroyed two weeks ago by days of heavy rain, would be repaired in t...

My best day at PCS   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I know I'm late, but I  finally have had a chance to get back home to make this post.  I was at PCS on the weekend of April 6th. After receiving nearly 3" of rain, I knew that this was finally my chance to find something really great!  After about 5 minutes in the mine, I found a 2" Chubby.  In total I found 7 megs -  all broken except two.  I also met several other BRF members after the day was over - Chris, Obses...

My best ever from PCS   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

It had rained 2 inches the day before and everything looked as though it should be a great day of collecting. 20 minutes into the hunt I found a nice little Chub just sticking out of a freshly eroded gully. A short while later while searching into another washout I spotted a root lobe and some serrations! As I stepped  down into the ditch I started my please be whole chant. It worked!! It was complete and was my biggest Meg ever at 4 1/8". I was in full gravy mo...

Rain, Rain Go Away!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Aurora, N.C. and the surrounding areas received upwards of two inches of rain on Saturday.  Saturdays hunt was canceled.  While I wanted some rain I didn't want my trip from northern Maryland to be in vain.  As luck would have it the PCS mine supervisor said the mine and entrance ramp was safe...we were going in!!!  The entire pit was devoid of all footprints...fresh material throughout!!!

Best Day Ever!!!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
After all the rain that the area had recieved all week, I knew that the finds in the mine where going to be good, if we could get in. After a phone call from a friend on Saturday morning, that the Saturday hunt had been cancelled, I wasn't sure if I should make the trip or not.  I decided to go for it. It rained almost the whole 4 hour trip, but as I got closer to Aurora is started to clear up. When I pulledt to the parking lot I was glad to see a ton of people there. After a short wait...
Macko Rackification   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I would have posted this trip earlier if my old camera didn’t die on me while I was collecting in the pit! I had high hopes for this trip after hearing about all the rain that PCS had received. I believe my mojo for this trip came from a fortune cookie that I received after eating Chinese for lunch the day before that said, “Good luck bestows upon you. You will get what your heart desires.” I’ve always wanted to f...

Not My Best Day Ever   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

The outlook for Saturday"s hunt at PCS with the BRFC crew couldn't have been better.  There had been two heavy rains since the pit was last hunted.  I just knew that the hunting would be awesome!

The hunting was as good as I had hoped, but the finding was where I suffered.  It seemed that everything I picked up had major damage.  I was seeing serrated edges everywhere, but e...

BRFC's Trip To Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

First I would like to thank Ditchweezil for allowing myself and my wife to be able to hunt with BRFC.  This year couldn’t have had a better timing with not one, but two different days of rain in between the last group in and us going in.  Also I would like to thank PCS and the...

Hey Mojo, Its Me, Ditchweezil   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Having had several weeks to ponder my poor showing during the Friends of the Museum Hunt at PCS a few weeks ago, I place the blame solely on the shoulders of mojo and how I lost it. I have concluded that it wasn't through a lack of mexican feast, it was because of my tools. I learned on wikipedia that mojo can only reside in qualified items - aka, not fresh off the shelf. Last PCS trip, I used a new rake with ...

Fossz-ology 101   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

It was time for a road trip to the PCS spring hunt with T$. We decided to hit a quarry on the way up with BRSR, famed fossil collectors affiliated with BRFC. We waited out a blinding rainstorm and then attempted a pre-PCS rack. T$ was a racking force to be reckoned with on this day as he took no serrated prisoners. By days end, 4 rics found his bag; 3 he dug near me. I found a few broken pune-eies and that, as they say, wa...

Okay Day in Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

From Aurora to Cleveland and beyond   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
First off all I'd like to thank PCS for another great colleting season, their  just is not another place like this in the world. People gather from all parts of the country and the world for 6-7 hours premium collecting. It was also pretty cool to see how many people were sporting the BRFC apparel.
Sharing ideas and knowledge with other members is another aspect of these trips I enjoy. Who knew that our ver...
Spring in Aurora...it's what keeps me going!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Just like the rest of you I'm always trying to find some new "edge" to find more fossils! So I read all the posts and studied any info I could find. Hmmm seems like lots of guys eat Mexican on their fossil excursions. What could it hurt....well when we arived in Washington NC. we hit a nice little Mexican restaurant. The food was great! So off to the room we went. Well now I know why DW has so much trouble at his rooms. It's the food he eats!!!We have never...

Still Getting Better….   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Still Getting Better….

Well, after going on last season about what an excellent hunt I had I thought that things couldn’t get better. To my shock and glee they did!!!

Not only did I find my biggest Meg yet to date from the site but I also found an extremely rare land mammal find – a Gomptherium tusk section!!!

But I jump ahead, so let me start at the beginning. The day started out with a monster of a first tooth – a nearly ...
PCS Opening Weekend   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Finding a nice tooth takes the pressure off the rest of the season.

I did pretty well on Saturday finding my best tooth with only a fraction of the blade exposed.  Also found a very complete bulla which was surprising.

There were SO many nicer teeth found than mine!  Special congratulations to Scubapaul for his 2 killer teeth (one his largest ever)!!!

Small Goodies From The Aurora Spoil Piles   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

For the past few weeks I have been hitting up the Aurora spoil piles trying to find the smaller teeth that you hardly ever come out on trip days into the actual mine.  I also wanted to say to the people that don’t make it into the mine or miss there day due to weather that there is still some hope with the spoil piles.  The teeth...

Aurora Steamer   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
The smell of fossils in the air signals the time of PCS Spring Season. Such a glorious time of year and it is preceeded by days of dreams of finding megs, honking mako's, and tigers galore. It was 'crisp' in the morning while we waited for the bus. The day ended with just about perfect collecting weather with temps in the low 60's; much more more enjoyable than the 80's we often get in the fall. As ditchweezil mentioned, it was slightly disappointing to see footprints all over the area fo...
Aurora Spring 2008   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

This past Sunday was a great trip. I think I may have finally been able to rub off some of my "Fossil Mainia" onto my wife. This was our 1st real get away since having a child, and it was about time.  The weekend started off on Saturday night with a nice dinner in Raleigh and we decided to stay in Greenville. So up and early on Sunday.. a little chilly but it turned out to be a great day.  One of the best things for me about these trips are talking t...

Aurora Sanchez   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Welcome to good times, good exercise, and the best surface collecting for fossil shark teeth anywhere. Yes, its that time of the year again when hunters world wide converge on Aurora NC in hopes of finding megalodon teeth of the highest order.

How I have anticipated the Spring 2008 PCS hunt! With no productive land sites in SC and water too cold to dive, its been a long fossil-less winter. Not exac...

Lee Creek Spring 2008   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I was fortunate to collect on day1 of the season this year.  I was super excited knowing day1 can hold great potential.  It was especially great because I finally got to meet a few folks in person such as DW, Riverdigger, and a couple others that until this past weekend I had only known via the keyboard & monitor.

As for the collecting, once we arrived at the ramp and got our quick do's and don'ts, the starte...

Final weekend in Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Last weekend the wife and I got lucky when two people canceled there trip into the mine last minute so we ended up getting one last trip.  When we first arrived the word was out that there had been two 6" teeth that had came out.  I was hoping that this day would be my lucky day.  Unfortunately this wasn’t my lucky day, it was the wifes.  She blew me away with all the teeth that she f...

Slowly but surely   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I would like to thank BRF and PCS for the chance to enter into the mine. With all the reports of lack of rain to uncover fossils we decided that we would head in different directions until one of us found a promising area then we would work it over together. I had been walking about 20 minutes when I found an area of Pungo and Yorktown mixed. As I pondered where to go next I saw a serrated tip sticking out...

Met some great people, and found some firsts for my collection. No monster Megs up I did get my 1st Cow Shark, 1st Porpoise tooth, a couple nice Makos and a really nice Sand Tiger in Matrix. After the hunt I met Obsessed1 and Toofless at the Spoil Piles around Aurora. We started talking and realized we where all members of this site. &am...

Lee Creek 11/25   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

First off i want to thank Blackriver Fossil club for the chance to hunt at aurora.  I made a weekend of it, stopped by Green Mill Run on saturday afternoon for my first visit there.  Home football game there so the place was hopping.  Only two other people in the creek though.  No great whites but did get baggie full of nice belemnites (first i've found) and one decent crow shark, also a first for me.

On to the mine! I col...

ROOKIE AT LEE CREEK   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

November 24 was to be my  first day ever into Lee Creek.  I was fortunate and thankful to get a slot, and really had looked forward to this trip for a long time.  The fact that  the fall season was coming to an end, and the lack of rain was not helping out with the collecting conditions, didn't matter to me.  I really just wanted to get down there, hit Greenmill Run  the day before, take in the museum and hope for...

Not a bad day... nothing spectacular in the shark department, but still some nice teeth--2 2"+ xiphodons, 3 Notorhynchus and some nice cuviers, plus a couple of bird bones (1 complete), an associated set of sailfish? upper & lower rostra (top of photo), and a few seal parts (canine, vertebra, metacarpal and peridic (rare!). ...
Lee Creek - Oppressive in October   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

My much anticipated slot at Aurora came back on the 7th and with word of the large collecting area spreading like wildfire, expectations were running high. At the end of my early morning eastward trek, I made a pre-pit stop at the Aurora Fossil Museum to pick up a couple of containers of spoil material that I intend on using for fossil talks with Scout troops. Once by bins were full I headed for the parking lot where it was great seeing so many familiar faces going in on the ...

Back to the war zone!!!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

First I would like to thank DW for setting me up with being able to post my trips.  I just returned from a 7 month tour in Iraq and I had the itch to...

Lee Creek Fall 2007 - First weekend - Best trip yet   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
What a trip…..

I could go on and on here folks but here are the highlights on my first weekend trip and the best ever trip ever for me to the creek:

Bests:

Best shape/condition/aesthetically pleasing Meg in my collection at just under 4”
Largest mako from the site for me at 2.5”
Largest modern tiger (cuvier) in my collection at 1.5” wide!
Largest section of ray plate in my collection at 14 rows...
Racking is the beginning of all achievements.   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I took a road trip with the great Alopias Ali to the holy toothing grounds of Aurora. I knew this was going to be a good trip after seeing T$’s and Da f0ssz’s fine rack last week. I ha...

Float Like a Carcharocles   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Hi Everyone, The fall 2007 collecting season in Lee Creek is upon us and my chance was today. I read that the area was big, but my concept of big did not match the reality of the size of the collecting spot generously granted by PCS. When I walked down the ramp, the area seemed limitless. The opening gun went off and the other collectors all seemed to know exactly where to go. Some people started looking almost immediately after the ramp. Some headed towards l...

First Trip to Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
So I've been drooling for the past year over all the finds you guys post from Aurora.  Finally it was my turn to go.  I had an excellent time and even met a few folks from the site.  Although I didn't find nearly as much as some of you experts, I was happy with my haul.  I was also happy that I was able to make it back to and up the ramp without passing out due to heat/exhaustion.  Bring lots of water if you are sched...
Gettin’ My Fossil Mack in the Outback   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

It was once again time for the bi-annual road trip to hunt at the PCS phosphate mine in Aurora NC. Or is it semi-annual?? Hmmmmmmmm.

Opening weekend at Lee Creek   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
It was time again to make the journey to North Carolina for the Fall Aurora hunt. I could hardly sleep the night before , I was up at 3:30 and ready to go . On the way to the mine I had a feeling that I was forgetting something, then my cell phone rang, it was DW , he was suppose to ride with me from the hotel (DOH!). Luckily he had his truck with him and we  all made it to the parking lot on time.
The collecting area this season is huge! You would have a hard time trying to w...
Master of the Pungo!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

For this long anticipated trip to Aurora. First, I would meet up at Da F0ssz’s pad. Before we left his pad I had to gaze over his prime fossil specimens. Especially his screamer chubs from past

Lee Creek Fall Season 2007 - the Rack in the Back   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Hunting for shark teeth at Lee Creek... Its so great, but Where do I begin? With catching up with friends in the parking lot, the awesome weather, the expectation of megalodon teeth on pedestals, or the electric excitement in the air from the other collectors? All of those are good ways to start, so pick whichever one you like the best and think about it for a minute if you want an intro. Else read on, because I'm ready to talk about the RACK!

The white hats told us ...

Last trip into Lee Creek for the season   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Not a bad haul, but a bit light on the shark teeth, haha. I spotted to find a nice section of Yorktown, and the fish fossils were a-plenty, including some nice tuna and drum vertebra. I also managed to pick up a bunch of shark cartilage, a seal incisor and a sperm whale tooth. The only real tooth worthy of note was a lower Isurus oxyrinchus that is easily my best example of that species that I"ve found to date. I can't wait for next season! ...
Aurora Fossil Festival/Final PCS Hunt of the Spring   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I would like to thank PCS for their efforts this season to provide a collecting area for us.  I saw a lot of nice teeth (most paid for with muscle aches and sweat based on the holes they came out of) this season.

After recovering from the fossil festival the day before everyone was excited to learn we would access a "new" area utilizing a ramp built less than a week before.  As it turns out the ramp ...

Back to Fossil Hunting   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Spring is a difficult time for me.  I have to split time between 2 passions (hunting and fossil hunting).  I've been chasing the elusive wild turkey splitting time between SC, NC, and even OK.  With no other hunting trip planned this past weekend I volunteered to replace a guide who could not make it Saturday (already on the schedule for Sunday).  The usual starting gun sounded and the first collectors raced down the ramp.  I had a...

Lee Creek 4/28/07   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
With no rain the previous week I didn't have high expectations for this hunt, I was prepared to do some digging.  I knew with all the brfc energy there it wasn't going to be a bad day. We started out by hitting the stuff most people walk right by, everybody is in such a hurry to get in the mine they walk past alot of good material. After pounding the pungo I set out to do some yorktown excavating. I found a nice hill of yorktown and started moving some dirt. After about 3hrs of no resul...
En Fuego at PCS   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

After a relaxing night's rest without A/C units crashing on mr. fancy-college boy, we headed to the PCS parking lot. Thanks again to PCS for allowing us to collect and thanks to the trip leaders and guides. We arrived at the pit and noticed the area reduced in size from reclamation. With the great Pungo and Yorktown material, there was still hope for a nice find. If nothing else, there were lots of shells. RivrDigr struck first with a really nice Pungo mako. Ironically, this ...

The makos jump into my bag.   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

We were all hoping that it would rain before going into the pit, but the rain never came. However, the lack of rain did not stop my ability to rack the teeth! I was picking of teeth nonstop through out the day, especially the makos.

I was impressed by da fossz’s killer chubby, but even more impressed by ditchweezil’s shell collecting skills

Lee Creek Hunt 4-28-2007   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Yesterday during our drive up to Aurora NC to hunt Lee Creek, we the vigilant shark tooth hunters of Black River Fossils braved the rain and gleefully anticipated the bounty the pit would produce if it were also hit with the thunderstorms. Alas, the rain barrier that has shielded the favored collecting ground of so many again proved to be an effective anti-erosion measure. The collecting area, ever shrinking because of the reclamation, was dotted with the footprints of last weekend’s hu...

Lee Creek 4-15-07.   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I went, I saw, I picked up some coral. This was the absolute worst Lee Creek trip I have has so far, and I started going in the mine in the late 1980"s. It was very dry in the quarry and I was told there hadn't been much rain for several weeks. There were footprints everywhere and even the Pungo was sparce. I got several dozen small Pungo teeth including a pair of Alopias, and two Yorktown teeth, one Carcharhinus and one Galeocerdo cuvier. Today it's monsoon season in Au...

Getting down at Lee Creek - Dafossz   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

The Aurora Fossil Museum Friends weekend hunt #2 was set for March 10th.  DW, T$ and myself were able to secure the same day, and a trip to PCS was set. Thanks to PCS and the AFM for the opportunity to collect fossils in such a rich locale.

We headed to hotel and relaxed with a Discovery Channel show on sharks and some refreshing beverages. We all agreed that most can achieve better life through chemistry!!  After a restful n...

Aurora Time!   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

March 10th was my day into the mine at Aurora and expectations were running high. I was at the parking lot by 6:45 AM and caught up with the other BRF’rs along with the many other faces that seem to get more familiar as each year goes by. The collecting area is huge and TM, JP and myself went about 2 hills in before we spread out and really started to search. Realizing that the many mud puddles were full of water the previous week, I focused my efforts along their edge and was quickly r...

Catching Up On PCS Posts   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

Here are some of my best finds for the past few trips into the mine.  Each day has someone finding a nice tooth, but not me.  The odds are against you right now with 50 collectors and 1 or 2 big megs finding their way to the bus.  I have had good luck with "odd" fossils and my first land parotodus.  I am slowly putting together my prey display with a whale "hand".

Gettin down at Lee Creek   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA

I was ready and determined to do a lot better than my first trip into the PCS mine. I walked and crawled over the pungo picking up small teeth non stop for the first half of the day. Then it was time to do some digging on the Yorktown. I was digging in an area with some good

Gettin down at Lee Creek   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
The 2007 spring collecting season at Lee Creek is upon us, and the active Lowcountry chapter of black river fossils made the road trip north for our slots as members of the Friends of the Aurora Fossil Museum. My anticipation was high, but after a night with less than 2 hours of sleep, I was definitely in for an “up hill” climb. (I’m so sorry for that one!) The material was exactly what we expected - Mounds and mounds of premium Yorktown and Pungo formation. Everywhere we looked we found excelle...
Spring at Lee Creek Day 2   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said. The area has potential it just needs some time. Although I am concerned that the reclamation is already creeping in. With that said, if your heading to the mine just take your time. If you see a good area spend a 1/2 hr going over it, maybe do a little scraping then move on. That's how my day was spent , although I did spend almost 2 hrs on one hill, with all the whale bone their had to be something, but nothing came out. I still managed to f...
Opening Day of Spring Season in Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Opening day of spring season in Aurora. Just the sound of it makes me smile. PCS was again kind enough to provide us with an area this spring and the first day hunters anxiously arrived in the parking lot with high hopes for the day. The temp was reasonable, but there was no sun and a bit of a stiff wind that made it 'crisp. There had been a lot of rain which was not what we hoped for this time ironically enough. My 'insiders' told me to hope for drought the week before the hunt, and it d...
The Stakes are Set, MSHA Training Complete   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Saturday morning all the volunteer guides met at the AFM Education Center to complete the mandatory MSHA annual refresher training. Following the refresher portion it was decided to put the boundary stakes in the collecting area. We donned our steel-toed boots/hardhats and boarded the bus. Since the mining operation has moved a considerable distance the trip to the ramp was interesting. Clyde outlined the boundary and off we went. After the stakes were set we had a little time to acquaint o...
A Day in the Pit-Car Area   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
Two years ago, on the Thursday night before I was to leave for my first ever trip to Aurora, I worked into the wee hours of the night making a screen that would fit perfectly into my backpack. I had heard that screening, while not done often, could be done in the mine and I was taking every measure to be fully prepared. I’ve taken that screen into the mine, tucked away in my backpack, on every Aurora trip since, and each time the voice in my head telling me to leave it home has grown louder. Tha...
Opening of Fall Season in Aurora   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
I know for a fact that some battles had to be fought to allow anyone to collect this season, especially that close to the working shovels. PCS was very generous in allowing us in at all so I personally was a little disappointed with the 'cost/benefit' comment on saw on elasmo. Nothing against Jim at all and I know in general what he means, but I personally don't think that way. Believe me, I have had dissappointing hunts in the past and *many* hunts where I got less than I hoped for or could ...
Aurora Fossil Festival   Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina, USA
This was my first trip to the Fossil Fesival in Aurora. I was impressed with the turnout for the festival considering that Aurora is such a small town. I was also impressed by the turnout for the volunteer trip into the mine on Sunday. I didn't remember seeing that many volunteers on Saturday. The trip to the mine on Sunday was exceptional. We were in a new area very close the where they are mining. I can see why they don't alllow hunting in the summer, it was pretty hot in there. I'm somewhat ...
