Home or High Water   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I made a trip out to GMR back in August and of course on one of the few occasions where I hadn’t even considered water level being an issue, I could see as I crossed the 5th Street bridge that finding a deep enough spot to wash gravel wouldn’t be a problem; the water was 2-3 feet higher than normal. There was an immediate sinking feeling in my gut and as I pulled into the parking lot my expectations for the day shrunk exponentially. I trudged up to one of my regular spots and probed my way throu...
GMR Trip in July   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
This was a trip I made back in late July. The first 2 or three hours were for the most part a complete bust. For the last hour I decided to move 10 or 20 feet upstream and found a small but very nice mako in the very first screen. Several screen loads later I found another really nice mako, this one was a hair under 2 inches. The rest of the finds included most of the usual suspects including the tip of a large megalodon....
GMR on the 4th of July Weekend   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
4th of July weekend has always provided a nice window to slide in a fossiling trip and this year was no different. After our Sunday morning festivities I headed out to Greens Mill Run to see what might turn up in the screen. The day was a bit lacking in the shark tooth department but I did find a few other interesting items with a small piece of a gomphothere tooth topping the list. ...
Holiday Hunting at GMR   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
If one’s prosperity and success during any given year were measured by hours spent fossil hunting, 2013 would be one of my more dismal. It certainly wasn’t a bad year, but the world of fossil hunting seemed to be in a land far, far away. I’m hoping to visit that land a little more frequently in 2014 and have a couple of irons in the fire that will hopefully make that happen. The first iron is simply that my daughter get her driver’s license in June. My wife works overnights which leaves me as th...
Dear Diary....................................Jackpot!!!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
My daughter’s volleyball schedule has really been cutting into my fossil hunting time over the past year; so when she came up with “fossil hunting” as answer #1 to the question of “what do you want to do on Memorial Day since your mother is working?” I just couldn’t let her down. It’s been probably about two or three years since I’ve collected with her and it’s amazing the difference those couple of years made. After the first hour of collecting, with my only good find being a decent but very ty...
1/2011 GMR trip, not exactly kid friendly.   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Well we made our first trip to GMR last weekend. It was interesting to say the least. We had to enter the river on the other side of the 10th street bridge. Walked right down thru the folks backyard I guess. I didn't realize that entering at the elm street park bridge would be so difficult with a woman and 2 children. We brought a 1/2" screen down to the stream and had some nice finds right where the water comes out of the tunnel under the 10th street bridge. But, i'm assuming there's much ...
(Great) White Saturday   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Christmas came a little early this year when I realized at dinner, on Black Friday, that I was on my own on Saturday morning………..aaaannnnddd instead of suggesting that I finish putting up Christmas decorations, my wife tells me I should go out fossil hunting – Gotta love her!! Since it’s been more than a year since my last trip (ouch!), I quickly had to go through my pre-trip checklist:

It's been a while... 11/23/10   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Hi guys!  It's been quite some time since I last posted.  Over the summer, I took 8 or 9 2-3hr trips down to the stream.  The best of the results of those trips may be seen in the third picture, which has some decent makos, tigers, sandtigers, some nice crows, sawfish, crocs, an enchodus, and a pretty little great white!  For size refere...
an old run....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
GMR Trip 7/5/2010   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Well the day started out meeting up with wrick we had discussed meeting up today and going out to scout a few possible new sites, the morning started out at around 9 am and off we went to the first, what we were hoping good site. We didnt find any teeth but did find some shells and some nice geodes, in which I will get some pics of tomorrow. We found around 10 or so softball size stones, for some reason these dont have the nice shiny crystals like most do, IDK.

We left ...
GMR Pays out again   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I have been pounding GMR for about a month now and still havent moved from one spot, I dont think that anyone has found this area or if they have they havent dug it out in quite a while. Last week I got 3 huge perfect teeth a 2.5" GW and 3" Meg and a 2.25 Mako all in perfect condition, today was no different. Starting off not finding much but junk and run of the mill finds Finally out pops the 2nd perfect 2.25" GW and then a nice bug meg just missing most of the enamel, a few mak...
GMR finally starts paying out!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

By way of introduction, I was first introduced to collecting fossil shark’s teeth when I was a kid in the ‘70’s in Venice, Fl.  I used to walk up and down the beach and snorkel close to shore picking up sharks teeth all day long.  After a long dry spell, not going to Venice and not finding any shark’s teeth, I went back to Venice in 2007 and found my first Meg over 5” while SCUBA diving.  That rekindled the old fossil hunting  flame and prompted me to...

An old report... and I mean an old one....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Rainy and cool,,what to do? Head south!!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

It was Friday evening and the weekend was supposed to be rainy and cool. I was killing time on the computer and clicked on my tab for North Carolina weather...sunny and 70!  There was only one thing to do..start packing.

It was 2AM when I pulled out of the driveway. The rain stayed with us until we were just across the NC VA border. After one wrong turn and a 45 mile detour through the NC countryside we arrived at our destin...

GMR- 3/7/10   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

This report encompasses the days of March 6th and 7th, and what warmer days they were! March in the 60’s with no wind is waaaaay better than February in the 40’s with lots of wind.  (Yes, I did get sick after the hunt from my first report.)  Anyway, as my friend and I made our way from Elm St. Park to the stream, some guy exclaimed his amazement that we weren’t wearing waders because of the cold.  I told him this i...

First post- GMR- 2/26/10   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Hi, this is my first post, sorry it’s a little late.  I’m an ECU student that discovered GMR held fossils a couple years ago during an ecology lab.  We were measuring current, aaaaaand I started to notice teeth peppering the gravel.  Needless to say, I got yelled at for not paying attention.  Ever since then, I would search for teeth in the stream on days I got bored.  Recently, I’ve started to become very interested in fossil hunting.&nb...

A hesitant post, but going, going gone...   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Before I get into this trip report, I want to mention that after the great day hunting, I returned Sunday afternoon to the same spot and found it dug out.  At first I thought it was city workers removing brush, trees, branches and logs from the banks.  I was wrong.  Forty+ feet of holes up and down the bank.  What a difference five days make.  It used to be my favorite spot but now I have a sinking feeling that its never going to be good again.&nb...
First Trip to Green Mill Run of 2010   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Me and Flex68 were up and on the road shortly after six and after a stop for coffee and gas and then a stop at bojangles for shoveling fuel we made it to the run.  First time I had been to the creek since July and all I could think about was the 3” great white that still eluded me.  Well that, and a fortune from a cookie the previous night stating that “My goal would soon be reached”.   So with high hopes we geared up and lumbered off to the creek.&am...

Mostly Greens Mill Run   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

It has been a long, snowy winter, and I’ve been itching to make a trip down to North Carolina for some fossiling. After reading the post ‘King of Fossils vs. MakoBoy,’ I contacted MikeDOTB to see if he would mind having me tag-along with him for a few days. He graciously agreed, so I left southwestern Virginia early Wednesday morning. It was only 13 degrees, we had gotten an additional 6” of snow during the night, and it was still falling, big time. Than...

The Best of the Run...Over 2 Months   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Hey guys and gals...Been awhile since my last post. Hopefully my pics are of better quality this time around. I am a full-time college student at ECU so when it rains I try to jump in GMR to see what I can gather. The following items have been collected over about two months, which includes about 10-12 trips. I use 1/2 inch screen to collect these. One thing to note is that I didnt include a ruler in the pics because the paper that it is on is 1/4 graphing paper. Well enjoy, and happy hunting. ...
unforseen events!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

newb to the site not fossil hunting. any ways this would have been an actual report if me and my father actualy made it to GMR. any ways sunday morning we left for GMR from here in tennessee. about an hour in to the trip we start seeing cops at everywhere with there lights flashing. turns out the one highway we needed to take had a huge rockslide. this had  happend about two hours before we had hit the road. only one woman was slightly injured. good thing it was 2 am or i could...

Our first GMR trip!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

We arrived at Elm Street Park shortly after 8AM on 9/14, got geared-up, and walked down to enter the stream between the apartments and 10th Street overpass. As we stepped through on the other side of the tunnel we saw our first gravel bar, so we stopped to check it out. Large pieces of bone and several belemnites got our excitement level cra...

Terminal Fracture   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Does that smell like GMR? Brown-capping in Hodgmans.   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

On the way to the fossil festival the family and I stopped bye GMR.  The kids while they like to find fossils they have a somewhat limited attention span so creek looking is great because they can always play in the water when they have burned themselves out.

Re-Check Those Rejects   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
The past year has been the biggest black-hole of fossil collecting since I started this hobby. I could usually count on Aurora to quench my fossil thirst but with my last two slot days being cancelled due to weather, it seemed that any opportunity to come up would get sucked into oblivion. Last week I finally found a couple of hours where I could get out. Despite my “love-dislike” (hate would be too strong a word) relationship with GMR, I decided it would be my easiest destination. I love GMR be...
My Second Fossil Expedition With My Daughter   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Should be cleaning, or sleeping but instead I am posting a really long trip report!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Just a warning, this post covers a couple trips and is a little long.

The first of these was a weekend trip to GMR following an awesome weekend in which we found several really nice great whites.   Friday there weren’t too many great finds to note and for me Saturday started off pretty slow.  Govinn managed to start finding some pretty awesome teeth and for awhile with my ½” screen I was lucky to even find gravel that would s...

New Sifter Luck...   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Tuesday was the day destined for me to make a new sifter. I had been using one of my buddies until I got one. Tuesday seemed as good a day as any. So I got my scrap wood together, got some 1/2’’ wire and zip tied the thing together, put me on a handle, tested it’s floatability and I was ready to get into some muddy water. Problem…I live in central NC. So Wednesday ended up being the day to go jump in GMR. I brought a newcomer with me to introduce him to my hobby. He started out with n...
SNAKE!! (Part 2)   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Hey!! Where's the rest of my pics???? It cut off the first five that I put on that last trip report... oh well... here they are... On a side note... I picked up over 6000 teeth in the last two trips to GMR and over 7500 teeth so far. ...
SNAKE!!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
OK… OK… OK… I’m finally clearing my schedule to write this trip report. It’s long overdue, and my sincere apologies are in order. These pictures are a combination of a few trips to GMR with MikeDOTB. We met thru this website while planning a trip to PCS and GMR. He’s turned out to be a great guy who has a huge heart for people and a great knowledge of this hobby. I’m honored to call him a friend. Mike, thanks for showing me GMR. Enough of the mushy stuff… onto the trip report. Like I said be...
Another late trip report, who would have guessed!?!?   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Friday, 12 June 2009.

I know I know another late report.  And I think its a little late at night because I dont recall too much of the days events but here goes....

After baking and sweating in the hot sun and walking around drenched during the weeks ever changing weather and being out in it all on the rifle range the long expected day was here.  Friday!  I was off the range at an early h...

past few months at GMR...   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
This is to be a quick post as it is my first and introductory one. I am a novice fossil hunter but enjoy it thoroughly. Probably not the most educated on types/species of finds but i have picked up a few in recent months. Hopefully sites like this and meeting folks out in the creeks will foster fossil education for me. Over the past two months I have prolly made about 5 trips out to Green Mill Run. I'm a student at ECU so in the summer Im at home and rarely have chances to get...
Thats what I like about Sunday!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I know that was a strange title, but you ever have one of those days where it seems the planets and starts align, the sun comes out, the weather is perfect, the birds are chirping and it seems like nothing can go wrong?  Well this day didnt start out that way.  The fossil deities favored us on this day!  It was June 7th and me and Govinn were back in the GMR.  We jumped in at 5th street park and now I hear it is actually calle...
Getting into a funk...   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Alright its been awhile so here I am once again playing catch up.

Starting with the fossil festival on the 23rd of May, which was my first time ever going.  I was greatly impressed.  Despite parking in completely the wrong area and having to walk back to the parade assembly area to get my car awhile later I had a great time.  I ran into many BRF members including DW, Brachiomyback, Sqqdlq and TonyH...
Don’t look a gift Equus sp. in the mouth…   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
05/10/09 GMR Better late than never report I guess   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

My plan was to get an early start and be at the creek by about 7 am or so, but for various reasons we didn't arrive and enter the creek until about 11 am or so. We entered the creek and started down stream to find gravel to sift and didn't get very far as my shovel and feet felt some gravel, so we took a few test sifts. We immediately found teeth and belemnites in the 1/4" screen sifter, so we decided to give it a whirl right there. My sister took the 1/4" sifter an...

Caught Up! Sort Of!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Alright, I am now posting for the previous weekends trip.  I am sort of caught up!  Sorry this is sort of a long post.  But I typed it all so I am going to paste it all in anways!

So after four months of faithfully serving me as best a screen could, it was time to retire my screen.  &...

Not So Fossilized Fauna April 3, 2009   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Early in the week Govinn sent me some emails arranging a fossil hunting trip for the weekend.  Just coming off the Black River Fossils Lee Creek Trip weekend I decided to take it easy this weekend and declined on the invitation.  Ha ha ha ha...

The day after Lee Creek Mine: March 29, 2009   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

The day after going into PCS Govinn and myself jumped back into the GMR.  The water had gone down considerably since Friday, and it was warm and sunny out.  What more could you ask for?

Even though the water had gone down it was still quite muddy from the weeks rain but then again who really see's what they are stabbing their shovel into when screening for fossils anyways?

So...

Trip From 4-3-09   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Ok its the day before my first trip into PCS and was to hunt GMR with govinn and MikedotB. I got there a few  hours ealier than they did. It was my second time and this time the water level was about only knee high Check out MikedotB report for week  earlier water level . http://www.blackriverfossils.org/GreenMillRun/tabid/53/TripReports/3330/Default.aspx &n...

March 27, 2009: A tale of unfortunate Events   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Reconnaissance, Fossils and Duck Calls... March 20, 2009   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I got out of work early Friday with a mission. Due to big fossil hunting plans the following weekend I was closely monitoring the water levels at GMR to ensure some great fossil locations would be accessible. So with a beautiful sunny blue sky overhead I started the hour and a half trip up to Greenville.

I finally made it with a couple hours of daylight to spare and after fighting some ridiculous Greenville rush hour traffi...

4/19 Life's a ditch... but I dig it.   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
The original plan for this weekend was for my girlfriend and I to hit up PCS on Sunday. Unfortunately I think my rain dance the week prior weathered a little more than the Pungo pile. I got the word that Sundays trip was canceled due to flooding. Oh well, no need to waste a perfectly good weekend. So we headed down to Green...
Pictures don't lie......   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I decided to take a couple of days off and spend some quality time with the “fam”.   So my sainted wife agreed to the four hour plus haul with me and the two “chitlins” for a trek to the Aurora Fossil Museum and possibly the GMR.   I then explained to her that I was exhausted from playing some on-line poker tournaments till 4 a.m. and requested that she drive. &am...

Green Mill Run-ning Beloved???   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Saturday and Sunday (28th and 1st) the eastern part of NC got alot of rain.  And by alot I mean ALOT.  So naturally I thought that give it a week and it would be prime for finding newly exposed teeth.  So all week long I found myself daydreaming of finding megalodons and great white teeth and every other kind of fossil in record numbers.

Saturday took forever to get here.  But finally it did and a...
Broke Back GMR......It's not what you think :-)   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

3-7/3-8

After our first trip, we were biting at the bit to go back to GMR. I kept having dreams about finding teeth and more teeth. I couldn’t get the Run out of my mind. I had built our new “Super Sifter 1000” and we were ready to put it to the test.

Last time, we stayed at the City Hotel and Bistro, so we booked the same room to stay there again. If you don’t mind the noise, then it’s a great place to stay. Our room had a Jacuzzi tub in it which...

A Good "Rainy?" Day at GMR   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
The long overdue first trip post.

After spending all day Saturday painting a house and eating BBQ I hit the hay early to get up early and drive up to the GMR for a full day of hunting.

Early in the drive it started raining but that couldn't deter me due to North Carolina weather changes every fifteen minutes.  Once I arrived at the 5th St. Park and started getting geared up and was immediately questioned by a ...
"Something wicked this way comes"..or maybe not   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

2-21/2-22

It was like a trip into another world. My wife and I decided to make our entry at the bridge by the park. We made our way down the bank, over the rocks, through the rushing water…….ugh!!!! And Proceeded to enter the deep water. We began cautiously because we were on the look-out for crocodiles due to the depth of the water. No one mentioned that it was so deep and disturbing. We had our chest waders on and I had my trusty rake scoop alo...

Cool Hand Luke.....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I made a solo trip to the Run last weekend for a group dig with my fellow brethren, the East Coast Fossil Club which congregated at the Green Springs Park bright and early last Saturday at 8:30 a.m.   I would have beaten my “neighbor” Reeltooth and his son with our same 3 hour drive if it wasn’t for my quick stop at McDonald’s for two sausage/egg/cheese McMuffins (fuel for shoveling).

We all geared up and headed upstream in search of many fossil f...

Tunnel Vision.....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Exhausted from the holidays, I needed some fossil vacation time from my holiday vacation time.  After fighting tooth and nail for a kitchen pass, or should I say pleading and begging, my kitchen pass would be granted if my honey-do list (helping in t...

Good....Better....Best....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

It’s always good news when the boss gives you another project in Greensville, NC.  I had a couple hours of late afternoon screening at GMR this past Monday.  The fall scenery was beautiful, but all I can say is that I should have brought a rake.  The leaves were dropping and the Run definitely will need a good flushing before spring.

Found a unique looking fossil that looked similar to my only porpoise ear bone which I found previously at G...

Pepsi Challenge   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

It’s always good news when the boss gives you a project in Greensville, NC.  I departed last Wednesday morning at 5:00 a.m. to start my 3+ hour trip.  I arrived early to ensure I had enough daylight incase I finished my job up and had time to find some fossils.  Well I did and had the predicament of either driving further to Aurora, NC and visit the Aurora Fossil Museum (never been there) to view the fossil displays and dig in the Pungo pile or just go the Gre...

Friday afternoon….. 1:00 p.m. and finished for work that day.   With my job bringing me 1½  hours away from GMR, I had to decide.

I think you're going to need a bigger boat....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

With a kitchen pass in hand and coffee in the other, GREEL and myself loaded up Labor Day morning to “labor” for some finds at the GMR.  My daughter heard me leave which resulted in her pounding the second story bedroom window yelling, ...

Fun at the Run....   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

First, I need to give a special thanks to Daryl for his assistance in identifying / verifying my finds at the Green Mill Run (GMR).  This is my first trip posting.

Testing the muck and mire at GMR   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Another small tooth day   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

We had been at Aurora on Sunday the 25th and decided to stay over to search in GMR on Monday. On Sunday I found my smallest Meg ever. Little did I know it was going to be another one of those days. I had only been to this creek once before and didn't find a complete Great White that day so that was my goal today just one complete Great White to take back to Maryland.

The first thing I noticed was that there were little piles of sifted gravel as...

Frost on the Pond Scum   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

Back on the 18th I found myself with an opportunity to get out for a morning of fossiling. I headed to ol’reliable GMR where I hoped to continue my trend of finding decent great white teeth. The temperature was 34 deg F as I pulled out of my driveway but the thought of not having hummingbird sized horseflys taking chunks out of my skin more than compensated for the cold conditions. Upon arrival I made my way up the path and s...

The perils of fossil hunting   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I met up with DW at GMR to kill a couple hours the day before our hunt in Aurora. We tried the area I found the monster meg last year, it's getting harder to find a spot that hasn't been completly sifted through. We would move along the creek bed , toss our backpacks down and sift awhile, grab our packs then move on to the next spot. At the one spot I saw the copperhead within a few feet of DW's pack. It could have easily slithered under or in DW's backpack. I'll definitely be paying closer atte...
Greensmill Run Snake Report   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I met up with rivrdigr at Greensmill Run for some pre-Lee Creek fossil hunting fun. I had lousy luck, but the digr did much better. Maybe one day he'll post again and you can see for yourself how much he scores.

At one spot where we were hunting, we met up with a gorgeous copperhead. He must have just shed his skin because his colors were really vivid. He was so docile that he posed for photos for us before slithering on his way. They really do blend in well, and we ...

Les Go Fosslin!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

My wife was in NY two weeks ago leaving me and the kids to fend for ourselves through the weekend. My son who just turned five generally doesn’t last long on fossil hunts so its been a while since I’ve brought him along. While at the neighborhood pool on Saturday I asked what they wanted to do on Sunday and (with absolutely no coaxing) my son blurts out, " les go fosslin!". Not wanting to stunt his youthful ambition I felt obligated to oblige.

A short venture into Typhoid Creek   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
aka Greens Mill Run. With the seemingly endless heat we've had this summer, I've been pretty much hibernating, but I had a few hrs last Friday, and we were at a balmy 90, so I figured I'd dart up to G-vegas to see what I could find. After about 2 hrs of sweating in places I didin't know I could sweat in, and swatting mosquitoes, I gave up. There was the usual haul of glass, metal, rocks, cans and a metric ton of weathered whalebone, but I did find a couple keepers: Two nice S. pristodont...
Do A Good Turn Daily   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I seldom get the opportunity to go out fossiling for an entire day, but with my kid’s sports seasons over and my family away in NJ, it was nice to get out and not worry about what time it was. I headed out to GMR Saturday morning picking up from where I left off the previous week in my search for a nice great white. I’ve hunted GMR about 10 or 12 times now - enough to know that there’s a ton of worn, busted, partial (and any other negative connotation you could apply) fossils...

Family's in NJ - Its go time!   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I’ve been big tooth challenged my entire fossil collecting career. I have found exactly two complete teeth that break the 2 inch mark: a sand tiger from NJ and a Mako from Aurora. And while I hope that one day I won’t be able to remember all the individual 2+ inch teeth I have, for now I’m relinquished to categorize my stunted collection by characteristics other than size. One of my pathetic categories has been overall massiveness of a tooth, partial or otherwise. The leader in that cat...

Back in The Saddle Again   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

The past two months had been the longest lull in collecting I’ve experienced since I started in the hobby several years ago. My shovel and screen have been relinquished to garden duty like two thoroughbreds pulling a plow. (Screens are great for carrying those small flower pots around). Between coaching my daughter’s volleyball team and my son playing T-Ball, time has been at a premium but Memorial Day weekend allowed just enough of a window to get out. I d...

Green and Yellow Mill Run   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
My Lee Creek warm up was on Friday, I was going to meet up with DW and the gang at the cretaceous dump site but it would have taken about 6 hrs drive time round trip. So I decided to hit the other dump known as Green Mill Run.  I know we all make fun of gmr, but yet we keep going back for more. Lets face it , we would dig around in worse cespools if there were shark teeth in it. I  hunted down stream where the water was shallow, no booties required just an old pair of sneakers....
Bacteria Mill Run   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

The third day of our weekend trip started with a vigorous shake from DW as I slumbered deeply. Remember…better life through chemistry!! After a belly-fillin’ fromage-chicken-egg biscuit we raced to the moving bacteria waters of GMR. In a strange twist to this story I had received multiple cuts from a cerveza bottle that I could not open with RivrDigr’s rental car key. At least I did not use my Finding Nemo toothbrush; that would have been a disaster if I had broke it. Why&...

Greensmill Run Clean Up Crew   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I did not come prepared this trip, but I still managed to find a nice lower great white. Next time I’ll bring waders and not my girly boots  refer to DW’s trip for a photo. This has been a great weekend of fossil hunting. I can’t wait to go back in the fall!

Greensmill Run Clean Up Crew   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

The final day of our North Carolina fossil hunting trip was spent in everyone's favorite squalid tributary - GMR. BigRedMeg gave us the scoop on a good hole (which we missed by half a mile, coincidentally) and we hunted the morning. da fossz and I had waders, but our budding meteorologist geologist t$ only had little girly boots so he could only hunt the shallows. I took a picture of them when he set them down. Be sure to check them out below. Next ...

Green Mill Run First Trip For 2007   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I arrived in Greenville N.C. early Saturday morning to meet up with some fellow fossil enthusiasts from Virginia and North Carolina. When I got in GMR I found evidence of recent fossil collecting activity. It might have been fossil screening debris from DW and crew. I screened for a few hours, and although I didn't make a huge haul of teeth, I did find some decent examples o...
Green Mill Run Primer   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

The Aurora Fossil Museum Friends weekend hunt #2 was set for March 10th.  DW, T$ and myself were able to secure the same day, and a trip to PCS was set. Thanks to PCS and the AFM for the opportunity to collect fossils in such a rich locale.

Greensmill Run Warmup   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA

I was really excited about this coming trip. I always look forward to taking road trips with da f0ssZ and DW because it’s always a GREAT time! We arrived at GMR right before sun down and quickly began sifting in the creek. I didn’t find anything post worthy this trip ...

Greensmill Run Warmup   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
We left at noon on Friday to give ourselves plenty of time to rest up for the trip into the Lee Creek mine. T$, da f0ssZ, and I arrived in Greenville about 5:30 and we made a pit stop at Greensmill run. We tried a different section of creek and even though we only had an hour before dark, we were in a productive area of the creek and we managed to find some decent stuff before the darkness forced us to discontinue our hunt. My best find was a pathologic squalicorax. It has serrations growing out...
GMR tooth du jour   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
It was time again to head up to N.C. for the spring PCS dig. As usual the plan was to go up a day or two early to hit the spoil piles and gmr. Scuba Paul and I both arrived at gmr at almost exactly the same time on Friday, pretty good timing since we are both live about 12 hrs away from gmr in opposite directions. We walked down to the creek to see that it was still high from the previous days rain, so we decided to hit a spoil pile and go to the museum. We got to the spoil pile or whats left of...
Quick trip to the creek   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I got down for the weekend a little early and had time to hit GMR for a few hours. The weather was about perfect and the water level was good, so as always, hopes were high for some primo great whites and crow shark teeth. Walking down to the spot i usually enter was a challenge - it was heavily overgrown and the picker bushed ripped up my arm pretty good. And, there is little better than dipping your fresh cuts into water with a strong potential for e coli :). Walking back to the hunt s...
Gold in Greenville   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
My daughter and I made a semi-spontaneous trip out to Greensmill Run on Sunday. This was her second time out there and it only took the first trip for it to become her favorite place to hunt. She likes it because there are a lot of teeth to be had even though most are beat-up and/or partial and/or very stream worn. I on the other hand have been itching to explore some other NC locales particulary ones accessable by boat, only, between my car breaking down and issues getting my boat registered in...
there G(oes) M(y) R(ide)   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
My daughter Juli went on her first official fossil hunting trip as a North Carolina resident this morning. I decided to strengthen her immune system a little bit by bringing her out to GMR for a couple hours of collecting. We picked up a couple of decent great whites including an 1.5" shamer that landed in Juli’s screen, along with a couple of other nice smaller great whites and some nice crow shark teeth. I had also planned on stopping at another stream in southern Pitt County, but half way the...
Nolan's 1st GMR Trip   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I took Friday off from work so I could drop my wife and daughter at the airport for a 6:30 AM flight to NJ and spend the rest of the day with my son. Nolan will be four in September and doesn’t really have the attention span for a prolonged fossil outing, so I figured we could spend an hour at Greensmill Run and use the rest of the day to do some reconnaissance around the eastern part of the state for future collecting trips. We arrived at GMR at 6:30 and upon climbing down into the stream were ...
A Morning at GMR   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Two weeks ago I was able to carve out enough time to make a morning fossil outing. I needed to be home by twelve for a family function in the afternoon, which would have been no problem back in NJ, but now that I’m a little further away from the collecting areas I needed to go somewhere I was somewhat familiar with. I arrived at GMR at 6:00AM and proceeded across the ballfield towards the stream. The first hour was very slow, picking up (and eventually throwing back) the usual belemnites but not...
The GMR Prequel   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Rivrdigr and I both arrived at the airport within 10 minutes of each other, got rental cars from the same place, and eventually met up at GMR for a dig. We spent about 3 hours together sifting the creek bottom. We started near one of the bridges and weren’t finding much of anything other than squid blemnas – which are tough to NOT find there. We moved down a bit and not too long I hear rivrdgr say ‘THERE it is’. I walks over with a beauty of a GW tooth – nice and fat. I continued to find ...
The GMR Prequel   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
It was a nice smooth ride into North Carolina. One of our many stops was at a gas station along the way and two guys were getting ready to duke it out at a gas pump for reasons unknown, but it was funny to watch. Then we arrived at Green Mill Run to hunt for a few hours before it got dark. It was my first time at the creek and I would have never imagined fossils being found here. I tore it up and didn’t do to bad for my first time at the creek. Ditchweezil even helped me score a nice crow s...
GMR Redemption   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
The last time I visited Greensmill Run was in July while down on business and out of the 6 or so hours I had planned spending on the stream, 5 1/4 were rained out. It was my first ever visit to GMR so needless to say, the anticipation to make up lost time was great. I drove down to North Carolina from New Jersey Wednesday night for a business meeting on Thursday then depending on how much time I had afterward, I was going to check on the progress of my house on Thursday afternoon or Friday morni...
Texans Invade the Carolinas   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
Well, this is a little delayed in being posted, but here is the trip report: This last Thanksgiving, my girlfriend and I decided to invade the Carolinas and get a nice change of pace from our Texas fossil hunting. Sure, we love to hunt out here, but its always nice to find things you don't find at 'home'. So we set off on the long drive from Texas to the Carolinas. We had some pretty good success, and found some nice fossils. I'll post some other trip reports for the other areas, but for no...
The Best Laid Plans...   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I drove down to Greensboro Thursday night for a business meeting on Friday at 10:00 AM and meeting with a realtor in Fuquay on Saturday at 2:00 PM - driving back to NJ Saturday night. So of course I had to figure out how to squeeze in as much fossiling as possible between my meetings. I figured if I arrived in Greenville early enough on Friday after driving out from Greensboro, I could squeeze a couple of hours in at GMR before dark and then be back on the stream at first light until about ten w...
Return to Hepatitis Creek   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
After Sunday's success in the mine I traveled to GMR hoping to find a modern Great white tooth. What I found first was an absolute monster of a crow shark tooth - almost twice as big an any that I've ever found in NJ!! I was stoked!! That was immediately replaced by panic with the sight of a fast moving water moccasin making it's way down the creek towards us!!! It pulled into the stream bank where my companion for today's hunt was tossing his spoils and "leav'erights". Good thing he didn't go...
the three dog day at Greenmill Run   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
After doing the PCS thing on Saturday my buddy (who will remain maneless at this point) and I decided to follow the tracks of our predecessors from the week before. After being verbaly abused by the 3 demon dogs we decided to try down stream. I left , well nameless sifting in what I thought was a good area and I went for a walk downstream to scope out any fossilbilities. The only good things I saw were 6 turkey, 4 deer and a fox, none were fossilized. By the time I got back nameless had s...
A Green Mill Run Chaser   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I've been reading about other fossil hunters scoring the awesome modern great white teeth at Green Mill Run, so this year da f0ssZ and I decided to try our luck at the place. He had been there before, but not me. We didn't bring the best sifters in the world, but they were good enough. When I first looked into the giant ditch, I wondered how we would manage to hunt without waders. We found a shallow spot and began to sift the gravel. Within about 30 minutes we had both scored some belemnoids and...
A Green Mill Run Chaser   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
On Sunday, DW decided to try our luck at Green Mill Run. I had collected there in my pre-BRFC days, so I thought I would be a useful BRFC paleo-bud and lead the trip. This site is interesting…Cretaceous fauna are found here as well as Pliocene fauna. The creek is known for its crow shark and great white (extant) teeth. We were armed with leaky boots and 94-cent sifters. DW and myself worked a small area for about an hour and pulled out some belemnoids and small teeth. Later in morning we located...
Up to my elbows in Cretaceous   Green Mill Run, North Carolina, USA
I met up with BC at about 10:00 AM at the luxurious Lemon Tree Inn. We headed to Greenville, NC and looked for a piece of the stream that might have some gravel in it. We put on the old waders and broke out the shovels and sifters. Several hours later we had a few hundred teeth and serious back aches. We hit Hardees for their 1/3 pound Western Burger and then drove back to the Tree to wash our teeth. I had a decent bag of goods. The best tooth was a 1 5/8 inch GW that has has nice serratio...
