This was a trip I made back in late July. The first 2 or three hours were for the most part a complete bust. For the last hour I decided to move 10 or 20 feet upstream and found a small but very nice mako in the very first screen. If one’s prosperity and success during any given year were measured by hours spent fossil hunting, 2013 would be one of my more dismal. Well we made our first trip to GMR last weekend. It was interesting to say the least. We had to enter the river on the other side of the 10th street bridge. Walked right down thru the folks backyard I guess. I didn't realize that entering at the elm street park bridge would be so difficult with a woman and 2 children. Well the day started out meeting up with wrick we had discussed meeting up today and going out to scout a few possible new sites, the morning started out at around 9 am and off we went to the first, what we were hoping good site. I have been pounding GMR for about a month now and still havent moved from one spot, I dont think that anyone has found this area or if they have they havent dug it out in quite a while. Before I get into this trip report, I want to mention that after the great day hunting, I returned Sunday afternoon to the same spot and found it dug out. Tuesday was the day destined for me to make a new sifter. I had been using one of my buddies until I got one. Tuesday seemed as good a day as any. So I got my scrap wood together, got some 1/2’’ wire and zip tied the thing together, put me on a handle, tested it’s floatability and I was ready to get into some muddy water. I met up with DW at GMR to kill a couple hours the day before our hunt in Aurora. We tried the area I found the monster meg last year, it's getting harder to find a spot that hasn't been completly sifted through. We would move along the creek bed , toss our backpacks down and sift awhile, grab our packs then move on to the next spot. At the one spot I saw the copperhead within a few feet of DW's pack. My wife was in NY two weeks ago leaving me and the kids to fend for ourselves through the weekend. My son who just turned five generally doesn’t last long on fossil hunts so its been a while since I’ve brought him along. I’ve been big tooth challenged my entire fossil collecting career. I have found exactly two complete teeth that break the 2 inch mark: a sand tiger from NJ and a Mako from Aurora. My Lee Creek warm up was on Friday, I was going to meet up with DW and the gang at the cretaceous dump site but it would have taken about 6 hrs drive time round trip. We left at noon on Friday to give ourselves plenty of time to rest up for the trip into the Lee Creek mine. It was time again to head up to N.C. for the spring PCS dig. As usual the plan was to go up a day or two early to hit the spoil piles and gmr. I got down for the weekend a little early and had time to hit GMR for a few hours. The weather was about perfect and the water level was good, so as always, hopes were high for some primo great whites and crow shark teeth. Walking down to the spot i usually enter was a challenge - it was heavily overgrown and the picker bushed ripped up my arm pretty good. And, there is little better than dipping your fresh cuts into water with a strong potential for e coli :).

My daughter and I made a semi-spontaneous trip out to Greensmill Run on Sunday. This was her second time out there and it only took the first trip for it to become her favorite place to hunt. Rivrdigr and I both arrived at the airport within 10 minutes of each other, got rental cars from the same place, and eventually met up at GMR for a dig. After Sunday's success in the mine I traveled to GMR hoping to find a modern Great white tooth. What I found first was an absolute monster of a crow shark tooth - almost twice as big an any that I've ever found in NJ!! I was stoked!! On Sunday, DW decided to try our luck at Green Mill Run. I had collected there in my pre-BRFC days, so I thought I would be a useful BRFC paleo-bud and lead the trip. This site is interesting…Cretaceous fauna are found here as well as Pliocene fauna. The creek is known for its crow shark and great white (extant) teeth. I met up with BC at about 10:00 AM at the luxurious Lemon Tree Inn. We headed to Greenville, NC and looked for a piece of the stream that might have some gravel in it. We put on the old waders and broke out the shovels and sifters. Several hours later we had a few hundred teeth and serious back aches.
