Here a cow, there a cow, everywhere a moo cow...   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I hit calvert cliffs early sat morning, and first found 6 cars had beat me there.  No worries though.  We haven't had any new rain so I wasn't killing myself to get there early, instead got an extra hour sleep.  Anyhow, my best finds came just minutes after starting my hunt.  I found the two upper cowshark teeth within 10 feet of each other.  Then I found the symphyseal looking carcharhinus or tiger shark teeth.  ...

Alone on the Beach   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I took a day off work yesterday with aspirations of hitting the Maryland Aquia Formation in hopes of finding some Otodus teeth, but something instead changed my plan in my feable brain to head for the Bay, so I did.  I had the beach all to myself all day long until I passed someone on my way back and by that time I was done.  I didn't find any megs, but I did find some pretty neat stuff for my collection, including a lower symphyseal cow shark tooth, a coupl...

i dont think i will ever be able to beat this day   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
On the beach we had 3 lines of gravel, I took the high line because 5 feet from the boat i found a meg up there so i figured thats where all the good stuff would be, oh boy was i right. So i stayed with the high line all the way down the beach and ended up with well you see. Every 10 feet or so i would find something great, either a nice hemi, mako or meg! I cant even tell you which came first because by the time i reached the end of the beach i had 9 megs in the bag. Then i started to look ...
i guess it was worth droping the cell phone over   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Well on saturday the weather was really bad, 4-5 foot waves and with those waves a boat sank, one guy broke his arm. So we didnt go on saturday

Sunday, the water is dead calm so i call a few people and ask them to come down and fossils with us. We get to the beach and its a total sand box but the water was crystal clear you could walk out into 5 feet deep of water and see the bottom, as we started to look in the water in became obvious that this is where all the stuff woul...
A link to the past   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
So would there be more than 30 people on the beach this weekend, no but there were still more than i usually see, as soon as we got to the beach we could tell it was gonna be good but at the same time could tell it was sandy, i guess all that sand from brownies came down. The water water up to about 3 feet deep was crystal clear, so we were on the look for big teeth. About 20 feet from the boat my dad finds a meg/chub. I stayed around where he found the meg and he kept walking down the beach, th...
Playing in the Dirt   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I headed to the Bay this morning (Sunday), hoping against reason for something good to turn up.  I was primarily sifting gravel for a few hours, and was finding some nice small teeth, including a large cowshark upper parasymphyseal, a few small but sweet hemis, and a thresher tooth.  I started to head back to my car, but I ran into Tony and Bob.

I had never done any digging in the fall piles befo...

Nice average 7 for 3   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Good weekend. I went out both days. Some nice stuff on Saturday but the megs didn't come until Sunday. Saw tom today. He had a real good day too....but I'm not going to spoil the fun for him. Seriously bob and tom it was nice seeing you guys today. Sometimes I forget that I'm not the only crazy one out there.

So yea 2 nice megs today (1.75, 1-9/16). 2 nice makos (1.5, 1-9/16). 4 nice hemi's. and some other bull. Anyway the pits still p...

I actully forgot how to post   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Hello everybody...I guess I have a little explaining to do. The camera thing, yes the cord is still MIA so I'm using the cell phone to send a pic to my email. Then download the picture and upload it onto black river. Log into Black river remember my password. And remember how to post. I'm telling you I broke a little sweat. Anyway-

This summer has been full of many wonderful things... such at bugs, sweat, sunburns, oppressive heat, "The Blues&...

Hannah: Before and After at Calvert Cliffs   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The first few pics are of the beach area the morning of Hannah hitting Maryland and its early affects on the waves.  I left early to avoid the major winds, rain, and potential storm surge.  Take a look at the waves hitting the cliffs.  That was early, so just imagine what it looked like a few hours later when the wind tripled in speed and the rain downpoured!  Then compare that to the last few photo's the next morning...what a beautiful sun...

Where Hanna goes people follow   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
We started the day as we do all others but when we got to the beach today we found there were already 4 people on the beach!!!!!! Now we got there at 6am!!! So i figured they just got there and it would be ok. Well the first person i come up to is a familiar face, Tony, he tells me he has been here since 4am and the other 3 were there before him!!! He showed me his meg and told me he was leaving because there was nothing going on and that he would be back at 3pm. As soon as he leaves i find my b...
I can't believe I walked by that   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I took my family for a weeks vacation at Matoaka Cabins. The mission was to find each of them their first Megs! The first day gave us nothing but a few Hemis and other small teeth. The next time we hunted NSO (not-so-obsessed) my fiance' found a nice 1 3/4" lateral. One down two to go! We went to another spot where my daughter found a sweet 2 1/2" Meg with bite marks on it! Only one more to go... The last day we were there we stopped and started hunting. Several hou...

Hannah fizzled out   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Well, the short of it is Hannah didn't do what most of us cliff junkies were hoping for, and that is, create new falls (cliff collapses with large piles of fresh fossil dirt).  At best all hannah did was stir up the beach a little.  I payed very close attention to the storm track.  I actually drove down to the beach Sat morning, just as the storm was hitting the Carolinas.  I had about 3 or 4 hours before the rains and winds would come, so ...

What Happened to Hannah?   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Even though Tropical Storm Hannah wasn't as severe around here as was forecast, I still had to go out to the Bay on Sunday to see if the storm had improved the hunting conditions.  The weather was great, and I couldn't get there until about noon, so I wasn't surprised to see the parking lot completely filled at Brownies Beach.  As I walked down to the beach, I was hoping that the water was low enough to allow me to get t...

love the smell of coprolite in the morning   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
i got to bring home a bunch of nice stuff like a new car!!!! The boat ran perfect again and made it to the beach with no problems. Just feet from the boat i find a meg in the water. I really wanted to stay but had a good feeling about going down the beach. After 2miles of walking i found.......well nothing. The most common find were the broken hemis. My dad already found a few nice hemis, a worn meg, and a small dolphin tooth. He heads way down the beach and i stayed around the boat, bad choice,...
an odd colored meg, and the normal stuff   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Well we had problems with the boat again, it took over an hour to get it going but when we got to the beach there was no one there!!!! whats the chances of that and to make it better there in the water was the best looking gravel i have ever seen. My dad walks down the beach and finds a nice meg, I stay at the gravel and start to rake. First i get a meg with a little of the root broken, then a few makos. Soon my dad comes back and in one of my gravel piles i see a root!!!!! I pull out a perfec...
sad trip...........why i dont like sunday   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
the boat worked well this time but that doesnt help you find fossils, up and down the beach we went and still nothing good. The gravel looked great but i guess someone took all the stuff the day before. I did find a few cool fossils, a vert with 2 holes from croc teeth that bit the mammal, and a nice whale tooth.

...
a nice trip again but still not many makos   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Things seemed slow at first, there wasnt much around but i was able to find an exposed block under the sand and in it was a 2" meg. A few feet down the beach i find a smaller reworked meg. My dad finally catches up, I look down in the water and see a rock, didnt look like anything so i walked over it. My dad picks it up and it ends up being a nice meg! He also found 2 coprolites. I found a broken fish skull cap and when i get home i find that my dad found the other half. I found a real nice...
Come on Fay!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

It's been a while since I posted a trip from the Bay.  Actually, it's been almost a month since anyone posted a Bay trip.  I'd bet that every other Bay hunter is in the same boat as me: I'm still going out every week, but I'm just not finding much.  We haven't seen any real storms in a good while, so there haven't been any new falls, and nothing is eroding out of the cliff.  At the same time, the number of people collecting there...

one of my best trips ever!!!!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
well we met up with obsessed at the cabins around 9am and didnt get to the beach untill 11:00. The beach looked great!!!! I passed by everyone and go down the beach where some big rocks were hoping to score a big one. i look on the ground and find a really nice meg. just over 2 5/8, I show my father he goes back to get the camera, I stated to look around and 10 feet from the other meg i find a 2.5" meg. i show everyone, and we keep walking. i start heading back twoards the boat, i see a mak...
4th of july fireworks!!!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
well this trip really started on fathers day when i found a broken meg and the guy i was with told me he never picks them up. Well this is why i do.... We didnt get to the beach untill 1 as we drove up we could already see 4 people on the beach. so we got the boat up on the beach just like any day and began to hunt. We really just wanted to see if the boat motor was still working and get some pictures for the people coming to the trip on thursday and friday to get an idea of what to look for. So...
cousins are bad luck   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
well i get a call from my cousin he says he wants to fossil, i say sure its always nice to have someone to fossil with. So we get up normal time and get to the boat ramp and everything is normal but as we start to pull out of the marina the motor comes to a stop. It wouldnt come back on....so we sit there out in the water for about 15 min., and my father says he is going to give it one last try. So I begin to pray to the fossil gods and sure enough it works!!!! I dont know how but it did!!!! We ...
fathers day trip   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
we got to an earlier start than usual geting to the beach around 5:30 am. On the first walk down the beach i looked down and see a beautiful 1 3/4 mako sitting there on the beach. A few steps from it i see a meg root sticking out of the sand!!!!! to bad the root was only 1/2 inch wide, but a nice tooth anyway. I stayed in one section for awhile because the teeth would not stop appearing. I dont think i have ever found this much teeth in my life. A guy soon walks by and asks what i have found, i ...
fog   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
the fog was thick!!!!! no wave action= no fossils so nothing was being found, the waves came later on in the day, tony found a squlaodon and i found 3 cow sharks and 2 retroflexus teeth. Tony goes to another spot and finds a nice meg and a mako. ...
memorial day fossiling trip   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
really sandy today so we didnt find much, i found a nice bird bone, a large hemi, and a deformed mako....
I Love Hunting...   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I had just finished my first pass down the beach and I had one small, beat up meg and a few tiny teeth...that's it.  I found virtually nothing.  I am not complaining about the meg,  but when Im the first one on the beach I was hoping for more.  On the way back the waves picked up a little bit and teeth started to show up, although not in great numbers.

One spot produced the two trip ...

Another Cow Symphyseal   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Now I have three...but two of the three are dinged up a bit.  This one has one serrartion missing but the rest is real nice...would have been sweet!  One nice poroise tooth, some good snaggletooth teeth, and an angel shark tooth round out a decent trip.

Good hunting.   Chris

mammal jaw!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Well my trip today started out when I saw Obsessed's latest post while I was at work. The fever struck me hard. SO I decided to leave work early to try my luck at a beach I haven't been to in about 2 months.

The tide was pretty low. Not blown out but a real nice summer time low. I wasn't finding much at all really just some tiny teeth. About 3/4 the way down the cliffs I saw a bone sticking out from under a boulder. I picked it up and ...

Launch of the "Fossil Flyer"   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

There always seem to be something that makes accessing the best fossil spots hard to get to. Sometimes it's the pitch black water that limits your visability or maybe the snakes or gators. At the Calvert Clliffs of Marylands public access is the big problem. The beach can be legally hunted up to the high tide line but you just have trouble getting onto the beach. You either have to know someone to access from thier property or own a boat. Well I don't know any landowners so I...

Slow Day   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I didn't have any luck with Megs and Makos today, but still found enough to keep me happy for a few days.  My favorites are the 1-3/4 inch Sand Tiger, and the huge Cowshark upper anterior measuring 3/4 inch wide and 7/8 inch vertical.  Both are the largest that I have so far.

Easter meg anyone?   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Remember when you were a kid and grandpa and grandma would hide the eggs on easter sunday? I guess all that practice payed off if your a tooth hunter. Sometimes you just have to be creative on where you search....and how

It all started when I met a guy named Jim down in Aurora last trip. He lives in MD and said he wanted to do some tooth hunting. We met up in the Chesapeake beach area around 11:00am and drove to an undisclosed ...

Just some odds and ends--   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

This is the best things from last sundays trip and today. Sunday was pretty pittiful except for the tiny meg. Today was looking really bad I only had 5 teeth in my hand and was actully complaining to my friend about how bad the beach was when I looked in the water and saw the mako about to be swept out. HOLY $#!*

I was hoping it was at least 2.5 but its not. I dont like to bring a ruler with me....I guess its kinda a bad luck omen. But anyway Still an awesome find f...

Nice Morning Hunt...Again!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Its funny how things happen.  I had been several times down to the bay and the megs always seemed to be hiding from my watchful eyes.  Now I have found three megs on two trips to the bay!!

This was a very average hunt until I found the first meg.  A decent 2 1/8" with a good root, sharpe serrations and a very wide bourlette for its size.  It was out in the open...easy pickins. ...

Sweet Little Meg   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Saturday afternoon, arriving at the beach at full high tide, people everywhere, not many teeth around.  I pulled a sweet two inch Meg out of a submerged gravel bank, and a couple smaller Makos, but not much else was found.

Cow symphyseal and a meg...just fine by me   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Had a good hunt.  Any time you can get two pretty rare teeth on one trip you have just got to be happy.

Its been a while since I have found a whole meg on the bay...its 2.5" even and in relatively good shape.  I love megs.  The cow symphyseal has two chipped serrations...but its got a whole root and so very rare I was still pumped.  Its only my second one ever so that was cool.  I also...

Where have all the makos gone   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Two weeks ago we were heading down to the beach talking about how we havn't found many makos this spring ,well not many i couild put in the case. The tide overnight must have fallen fast leaving the beach covered with shell and fossils. With the beach to ourselves we split up to try to cover as much as possible before someone else wandered along. After four passes down the beach we were still picking up teeth. We covered are lack of makos with two 1 7/8 makos ,six between 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 and over...
If You Can't Be Good, Be Lucky!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The beach had been pretty well picked over by the time I got there Wednesday afternoon, and although I had scored a sweet Mako, the Megs were nowhere to be seen.  I decided to head back in, and call it a day, happy with the nicest Mako that I've found in a while, plus two lowers.  I love the curved laterals, and this one was in great condition and good sized at 1-5/8ths.  <...

At least its a meg   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

SUNDAY    A friend and I wen't down to beach 2 of yesterday. Hot as ever this time no fog to shade us. It was high tide in the morning and very little on the beach so I occupied myself by .............. Without finding much that way except a AWESOME COW I was forced to walk around. Up and Down Up and Down. Eventully the tide went out and man it really did go out. I ended up ...

Toothing in the 98th DEGREE   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

SATURDAY     morning was foggy and muggy. They were calling for temps in the mid 90s and 100% humidity. I think that equels out to feeling something like 136 degrees. The fog blocked the sun until around 2pm. I decided to go kayaking. The beach was crawling with people but I did get to meet bmore for the first time. The best thing there ended up being a squalodon tooth + a few ok makos.....nothing great. And by that...

Two Bay Hunts   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I headed to the beach Saturday, figuring that the weatherman was just kidding when he said something about severe weather.  The beach had already been worked pretty hard by the time I got there, so I didn't find much in the way of big teeth, but I did get some sweet Cowshark teeth, including my largest lower symphyseal to date at 11/16ths wide, and my smallest complete lateral at only 7/16ths wide.  Unfortunately, I was concentrating so mu...

Lee Creek look a likes   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Make no mistake the bay is not Lee Creek, but sometimes you can find teeth that have just "melted" out of the matrix.   These gems can be just as pristine and in some cases have a very similar color to the famous teeth from the south.

This mornings trip was very typical of what can be had on a semi product...

High Expectations   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I have not been to the bay in a couple of months, and while I am happy with a good hunt (actually this post represents two trips to the bay), I have been hoping to break my own mini "meg drought".  Its been a while since I have found one...let alone a nice one.

That will have to wait...no meg again.  This trip did have some cool finds though highlighted by a couple of very nice mako...

World Record Tiger Shark tooth   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

We've had tons of rain up here in Maryland over the last week or more.  Usually the amount of rain is the result of a Hurricane like Isabel a few years ago.  I don't know the final total, but I think it's at least over 7".  Normally when I go collecting at my favorite beach(s) along the Chesapeake Bay (Calvert Cliffs), at most the water level is a little above the knee at high tide.  If we get some rain, the high tide may even reach th...

A little bit of everyting from the bay!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

This post is two trips combined. All the rain and rough water has washed away large parts of the slump piles along the cliffs exposing many new fossils that until recently were covered by tons of material from the cliffs.

Day one brought a sweet Hemi, a patho Hemi, one of my favorites a upper cow shark teeth and a nearly complete dolphin axix vert.

Day two started out great with my most complete ...

My Best Day Ever (or Why Is That Guy Dancing on the Beach?)   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

With all of the storms that we've had lately, I had a good feeling about going hunting today.  It turned out to be my best day ever!  The beach has been completely rearranged, with some old falls gone and some new falls present, and the teeth are abundant.

I had never before found a 3 inch Meg here, but today I scored 2!&...

High waters   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Tides were running above normal on sat so we watched the forcast and left to hit the afternoon tide. The dirty water made things hard so we scanned the beach blocks. I marked two blocks with verts then found an angelshark tooth in a third block. While taking the blocks back to the boat ,I picked two good hemis and a complete cow.We tried raking some teeth in but only managed some small makos and sand tigers. The one bright spot was a nice baracutta jaw and a fish spine....
microMEGATRON   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
We took our boat out to check out a few beaches last week.Pulling up on our first stop we had the beach to ourselves at least for a hour or so.The beach had a nice covering of gravel and shell but teeth were far and few between. We did find two 1 1/2 makos and a dozen small makos .Down the other end of the beach I picked up a small 1 1/2 meg , then two micro megs. The smaller one was under 1/2 inch wide, the smallest one we have.We rounded it out with a few dozen hemis and a dozen sand tigers.Abou...
Tiny Treasures   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

When I headed out on Saturday morning, I knew that the conditions would be far from ideal.  High tide was about 9 AM, the surf would be high and rough because of all the rain, and more rain was in the forecast.  I knew that surface hunting wouldn't work today, so I broke out my old sifter and shovel, and went in search of the smaller, rarer teeth that can be found here.

I love those cows!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I had a feeling about this place. You know the kind of feeling that makes no sense but you just have to go with. This place gets hunted so hard that you almost never find much of anything at this time of year but I just had to try. The only one there when I arrived was a guy from NJ that had been scheduled to hunt PCS this weekend and had never been here before. As I passed by I gave him a few pointers and headed down the beach. I found an interesting little vert almost right...

Sand sand everywhere   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
On sat we made a high tide trip to the beach ,trying to avoid afternoon storms. We packed the boat with shovel ,rake and sifter to cover all possiblites.Stiill we wern't ready for the sandbox the beach had become ,after two waveless weeks.I did find find two small threshers and two porpoise teeth before coming across sereral smaller makos.Coming back down the beach I found my first larger teeth a nice 1 7/8 mako with serated cusps and a 1 3/4 black dorsi.By this time the falling tide had uncover...
Big rock   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Mid april in Maryland marks the great annual migration.Hordes of men with large boats pour into the state cloging every boat ramp marina and water way.For a short time fossil hunting becomes a contact sport between trucks, trailers and trolling boats. We hit the marina early and after a little hold up got to the beach two hours before low tide. With calm winds and waves under a foot for the last week, pickings were slim. After walking the beach high and low twice ,the only large tooth I had was a ...
Chesapeake Bay Trip 4/18/08   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

On Friday I found myself with the unexpected opportunity to go tooth hunting all day.  I got to the beach at about 6:30 AM, about 3 1/2 hours before low tide, and there was nobody else there yet!  Unfortunately, the conditions were pretty lousy.  The water was absolutely still, with no wave motion at all, so anything under the sand was going to stay there today.  I did manage to find a few decent Makos, the lar...

Hemi's from the bay   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
High tides and the threat of storms kept us off the beach on sat ,but on sunday morning things looked a little better. We got to the beach a little late and were happy to have it all to ourselves ,even through it looked like the high tide had left sand behind instead of teeth. We did manage to find a nce color meg a shade under two inches and a few good makos but the real surprize was the hemi's.We found almost 80 of all sizes tossed out by the surf.We also found three partial ray plates incuding...
Yeah Baby!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

My 2 month old daughter woke me up at 3:30 this morning, and after finally getting her back to sleep, I couldn’t get back to sleep myself. Well, as long as I’m up, I may as well hit the beach! I got there before sunrise, about 6:15 am, and still wasn’t the first one there!  It was about 4 hours before low tide, though, and I knew that teeth would be washing out with every wave, so I wasn't worried about the other hunter.

a little late   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
We were adding some recent finds to a display case today and realized we had forgotten to post a trip report. We got to the beach early yet already we had three people working the beach in front of us. Overnight the winds had blown the tide out,but now the bay was calm and clear. We walked the wide shallow flats picking up verts and bone ,waiting on the people in front. All three had made it to a far at the far end of the beach and for what seemed like hours hoverd around it.Finally one by one th...
Always something new   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Last weekend I spent about 5 hours on a beach…About 2.5 hours on sat and sun.  I had a total disregard for time of day, tides, and winds all weekend. Didn’t check any weather reports I just thought the beach would produce something.

Good finds can come in many size   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
This day did not start out like a normal fossiling day. We were plaining on going but the weather was not the best for taking the boat out but after about 5 hours the wind started to die down and we saw it as i sign to give it a try. When we first got into the water it still didnt look good but i wasnt about to turn around and give up on this trip i had a feeling that it was gonna be good. So we finally beach the boat and get out and start to walk the beach but the waves were so big that there r...
Golden   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
We headed to the beach at daybreak with someone walking just behind us . I hurried down the beach picking up teeth while trying to stay ahead. The beach looked perfect but by the end of the beach ,I had one large hemi the rest of the large teeth were broken. The one large mako was missing most of the root and the megs were small pieces. I took a little more time on the way back and after only fifty feet , I spotted a large tooth in the shallow water. It was an almost perfect 2 inch meg with a ni...
Goodies from the Bay   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

These teeth are from two trips to the Bay this week.  On Wednesday, the forecast sounded good for a blowout tide, so I headed out around noon for the afternoon low, but the blowout didn't happen.  I didn't find a whole lot, but I did get my largest Bay Mako to date.  It's missing a root lobe, and the tip is chipped, but it still measures just over 2 inches.

I had much better luck yester...

Land Mammal tooth   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Highlight of this trip was a land mammal tooth from zone 8. It's barely 1 cm square. Will be donated to the CMM and according to the author of a soon to be published paper on the land mammal fauna of the Calvert Cliffs it is the first recorded land mammal tooth found in zone 8. Preliminary ID is a deciduous peccary tooth.

Found a nice number bunch of one inch hemmies too.

OPEN YOUR EYES and see the light/tooth   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

No body answered the call for kayaking this morning, so it was just Bob and I. Early morning.  There was already one woman on the beach who claimed she didn’t find to much…..I don’t know if I believe that.  But I did pretty well. Just started out combing the beach and no...

thanks for all the little ones guys   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

This Wednesday reminded me of the good old days when you went to the beach and picked up anything that even looked like a tooth. I ended up getting 354 teeth nothing major. But a very relaxing day.

Blowout   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
With low tide at daybreak two people still got there just in front of us. Winds had blown the tide out overnight. The few teeth that could be spotted had to be pried from the frozen mud.Verts were everywhere sticking up from shallow puddles on the flats. I searched for that big tooth ,I knew was waiting for me ,all the while filling my backpack with verts.By the far end of the beach I had found several shark verts ,one croc vert and 32 whale/porp including one in a small matrix block. With the ti...
Calm Seas   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
With low tide near noon we decided to check the beach out for a hour or so .We got to the beach 2 hours before low tide hoping to be lucky instead of first ,bu the bay was dead calm . The beach was scattered with tiny teeth ,matrix chips and shells ,but the larger teeth sank beneath sand.We did manage to find 2 good ,1chipped mako all 1 1/2 ". Found a few meg chunks but nothing whole .We did find 1 more complete cow shark and a few hemi before leaving for lunch. We seem to be on a mako cow...
Muddy water   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Low tide 7:30 1st on the beach . Was looking good ,but the wind was already driving the rough muddy water back in.Some teeth would appear for an instant ,then be swept away.We managed to find a 1 1/2 " meg and a 1 1/2 "mako walking down the beach. On the way back there wasn't much beach left ,but we did find a cow shark,a path hemi and two partial megs.It was time to go before water overran are hip boots....
A new year   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
I haven't posted in a while but the cold weather has put a damper on our boat travel and easy access sites tend to get picked over even in winter.None the less here's a few posts from the last several weeks. We got to the beach a bit late with four people already near the far end,so we took it slow . When picking up a vert half buried in the sand ,something shiney was left in the hole . I reached in an pulled out a strange curved 1 1/2 " meg . It has has some tip damage but once you have at...
10/6/07   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I spent the weekend camping near Calvert county MD, I didn't find any big ones but with as dry as it has been this summer I'm happy to have found what I did. This is also the first time I saw someone sifting for teeth, I've never done that before but look forward to giving it a try.

See you next summer (or sooner if I can get away for a day or two)

All Broken Up   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I headed to my favorite beach yesterday, getting there about 3 hours before low tide.  I was expecting a blowout tide, but the strong winds that had been forecast never showed up.  It looked as though I was going to be the first one to hunt the beach today, though.

In one sense, it was an awesome hunt.  I found two small Megs (plus about a third of another), 6 Makos including a tiny juv...

The Best Laid Plans   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The plan for this past Sunday was to get to Purse State Park at about 10 am, about 2 hours after high tide, spend the first hour or so walking as far south as I could go, and then spend the day hunting for that perfect Otodus that I know is out there waiting for me.  Unfortunately, I couldn't get on the road until about 11 am, so the 1 1/2 hour drive one-way killed that plan.  I decided to head to Brownie Beach instead.

Super lucky day at the cliffs.   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

A month and a half ago.....

Early morning in Calvert County the usual access was blocked by an incredibly high tide. The recent freezing temperatures had brought down a slew of material. We fooled around with some beach collecting then decided to spend some time digging. I found a good si...

Calvert Cliffs Rarity   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I almost stayed home today.  I didn't get to sleep last night until after 2 am (joys of having a three week old baby in the house!), and was up at 6:45 am to get the older kids up for school.  Plus, I seem to be catching my wife's cold.  I was literally sick and tired!  I decided to go to my favorite beach, though, because my stepdaughter stayed  home from school and was able to help with the baby, and opportuni...

Tooth-a-palooza 2008   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Simply unbelieveable.

This morning I got to the beach with a low tide not a soul in sight and no wind.

Found some hemis...

Yes, it was worth it!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I went to my favorite beach today, not expecting to find much.  I got there about 2 1/2 hours before high tide, with a southerly wind blowing the water back up the bay.  The water was deep, dirty, and very rough.  I knew that surface hunting wasn't going to work today, so I brought along my sifter and shovel, hoping to find something decent rolling in the surf.  Unfortunately for me, the water was so deep that in most places, the...

Had to scratch that itch   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Well its been a while since I have made a trip to the bay.  This past weekend I just had to get down.  I have been busy with work, and semi-side tracked with looking for shed antlers of deer.  Needless to say my wife "loves" my other new hobby of  finding more calcified parts of animals to jam into my already creepy office.

This post actually represents two fossils trips.  One is to the bay ...

long day without much to show   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

7:30 am to 11:30----1pm to 4:45pm-----and finally 5pm to dark.  I spent my time on two different beaches and man without much to show for it. The tide was out but the wind was pushing the water on the beach all morning…..so not to much luck there. After coffee and lunch the wind had died down but still not much luck at (1).

It's good to get back out there   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I haven't been able to get out much over the last few weeks, but on Tuesday I found time to hit my favorite spot along the cliffs.  It was very cold, there was intermittent freezing rain falling, there were a half dozen other hunters on the beach, and teeth were scarce.  I had a great time out there, though.  If I don't go tooth hunting at least once a week, I start having withdrawal sickness, so this trip was definately needed!...

teasers from the bay....And a miracle   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Sunday: February 3, 2008……..

Mark and I walked up the beach a few times. I found 2 meg fragments out in the water. The largest would have been a beautiful 2 ¾ upper. The tip of another meg probably from a 3- 3 ¼ lower. Some makos and some hemis. The tide came in a lot during high but the water was very clear and extremely calm.  Made for good collecting…pre...

Toothing in a Winter Wonderland   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Today was a first for me - I arrived at my favorite beach, and there was nobody else there!  Not even any footprints in the sand!  I've never had the beach to myself like that before.

Water conditions were very good today, with an extremely low tide, but the weather sucked.  It snowed on and off all day, and the stiff wind made it even colder.  Luckily, the teeth made up for the cold!<...

mega trifecta at calvert cliffs   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
Wednesday at the Calvert cliff formations my brother Bob and i take another shot at locating some more megaladon teeth. Hoping for perfect conditions (which they were) thirty minutes into our endeavour I find my first megaladon tooth of the day, although far from perfect it was still a good find at 2 1/8 inches. Ten minutes later along the waters edge i find a much more well preserved tooth, and at 3 inches, I knew it was going to ...
Frozen Day at the Beach   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I went to my favorite stretch of beach on the cliffs this morning, with temperatures in the mid teens.  Ice was everywhere, to the point that the previous high tide never made it to the beach.  Teeth were very scarce, but I managed to find a sweet Mako and a small Meg with feeding damage, both of which measured just a hair under 1.5 inches.  Even without finding a whole lot of teeth, I still had a great time out there today.  I ran into Ton...

Nothing else to do on a saturday morning.   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Woke up late and met obsessed down at the beach. The tide was coming in pretty strong by the time we started walking. The good kind of incoming tide. The kind that as its coming in lifts all the lighter sediment off the shell lines on the beach first. Leaving behind all the heavier things. This only lasts for a little while and then the conditions just plain suck. Obsessed and I saw a nice mako at the same t...

Jr   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

So it was the second day of digging. Bob met me down there at sunrise and to catch the worm.  We walked the beach with not much luck. I got a couple smaller makos and a severely beaten up meg about 1.25’’. We worked for a solid 30 minutes uncovering our ten we found on Sunday. I was working the matrix out and doing a lot of sifting to get ...

pile   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

January 13, 2008

10am. The wind was kicking from the east so beach collecting was pretty rough.  Beach collecting wasn’t the goal for today anyway. I met Bob and Chuck to dig an old pile.

1/5-6/2008 What a difference a day makes - or – its pays to have your lucky charm!!!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
What a difference a day makes - or – its pays to have your lucky charm!!!

Went to the Bay this weekend to accomplish a bunch of non-fossil things and then try to squeeze in a trip or two to the beach. Saturday the tides were too early so I slept in and made it to my favorite spot a few hours after low tide. Surprisingly, I had the beach to myself for the whole time and the winds kept the water far away from the cliff base. Found a bunch of smaller stuff and a few bones ...
average meg+mako from the bay   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Sunrise today. It was high  tide in the morning but the tide never really went out at all toady. I stayed for 6 hours and did pretty well considering I only found teeth in the surf, no digging today.  I got 5 makos the largest 1 3/4. A sweet 2 1/8 meg! And a to...

Bay Graveyard   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The bay is a big graveyard of sorts.  On a very low tide the other day I found an assortment of bones from whales and porpoises.  Unfortunately not many teeth were around on this day but it was still good to be out.

I did manage to find a horse tooth (a first for me), a nice cow shark tooth, a small meg, some nice snaggletooth, and another dermal plate (I have found a lot of these lately??).

relaxing day   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The tide was higher then expected due to some nasty winds. We walked the length of the beach picking up basic teeth. All the way at the end was a slump pile. I climbed up the top of it to get a look around and poked through some matrix and after 5 seconds of poking pulled out a 1 7/8 meg….Pretty sweet!

waking up lates a B!T(H   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I woke up at 6 to be down to the beach a little before sunrise…Then went back to bed, woke up at 645 and said, “well lets go”. I got down on the beach and saw 4!!!! People in front of me….This is not a good sign.. What makes matters worse is it was a special kind of low tid...

Rainy Day at the Beach 12/30/07   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
I headed to the beach on Sunday, and got there late as usual, around noon. At least 3 hunters that I knew of had already hit the beach that morning. I hoped that they hadn't found all the good stuff, though, and I wasn't disappointed.
As it turned out, the first find of the day was also the best! Approaching my favorite spot, I saw another hunter searching the exact little area I was heading to. He left just as I got there, and as soon as I started searching, I spotted a near-pe...
catching up...Trip from 12-23-07   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

The tide was high and winds from the east making for difficult conditions. I decided to hunt the shell line from the high tide the previous night. About 20 minutes later I saw a large Mako partialy burried in the sand. I could only hope it was whole. I plucked it from its resting place and cleaned it off. It was complete and at 2 3/8" my best from the bay. After that the rest of the day was uneventful with only small teeth and some assorted bones.

Tried my luck a second day.   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Today is Sunday and after the monster mako yesterday I just had to try my luck again. My goal was to dig a large section of matrix and hope for the best. I finished off the little area the mako came out of. Hit another spot right beside it…Then still with no luck decided to start attacking a rather large pile. I went through tons of matrix. Thr...

M---A---K---O   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

Woke up late and headed to the beach. Ive been doing a lot of hunting at Matoaka  Cabins on the Choptank formation lately.  Anyway met two nice me I believe their names were Bob and Chuck. They hadn’t had to much luck at my favorite spot so they were walking out and I st...

Strange little Meg from the cliffs   Calvert County, Maryland, USA
On Thursday December 27, I headed out to my favorite beach on the Bay. I got there later than I had hoped, around 9 am. I knew that the beach had already been hit by several other hunters. Walking through the water to the hunting grounds, I met a friend of mine, who is a very good hunter, who was heading in. He said that the beach was pretty well picked over even before he got there, and as we were talking, another hunter was coming up from behind me. Needless to say, my expectations were prett...
cool and weird stuff from the cliffs   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

So I finally own a digital camera so you all should be seeing alot more good posts from  me...cliffs permitting.  Anyway here are some interesting finds Ive had from the Calvert formation within the last year.

The first is a mystery bone I found why wading in the water. Looks like an antler to me but its hollow inside?

A meg stuck in concretion I dug out of a pile in April.

And a large piece of fossilized woo...

Half Off Surf and Turf!!   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

This report is from last Sunday.       I was able to get down to the cliffs for a while on Sunday morning and even though the wind was blowing from the NE which means larger than normal waves and therfore harder hunting it still beats staying at home!! With the waves being what they were I was scooping up anything that had that "black" fossil look.

I ended up doing ok. But both the ...

Unknown Fish? Fossil from Calvert Cliffs, MD   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

I found this odd shaped "bone-like" fossil several years ago along Calvert Cliffs, MD.  For some reason, I think it's some sort of fish bone/fossil, but not really sure.  I actually have two of these, and they are identical.  Anyone out there know what this is or have one like it?

Daryl.

Associated Megs???   Calvert County, Maryland, USA

This trip really could be called "Mixed bag part two".  I had time for a quick trip this morning and once again I found a good variety of neat things.

Highlights include some porpoise ear bones, one small porpoise tooth, a single but nice cow, a bunch of good snaggletooth teeth with one having a deep reddish color, and what looks to be a thresher tooth.  Lots of basic teet...
