Well we had problems with the boat again, it took over an hour to get it going but when we got to the beach there was no one there!!!! whats the chances of that and to make it better there in the water was the best looking gravel i have ever seen. My dad walks down the beach and finds a nice meg, I stay at the gravel and start to rake. First i get a meg with a little of the root broken, then a few makos. Soon my dad comes back and in one of my gravel piles i see a root!!!!! I pull out a perfec... |

the boat worked well this time but that doesnt help you find fossils, up and down the beach we went and still nothing good. The gravel looked great but i guess someone took all the stuff the day before. I did find a few cool fossils, a vert with 2 holes from croc teeth that bit the mammal, and a nice whale tooth.

Things seemed slow at first, there wasnt much around but i was able to find an exposed block under the sand and in it was a 2" meg. A few feet down the beach i find a smaller reworked meg. My dad finally catches up, I look down in the water and see a rock, didnt look like anything so i walked over it. My dad picks it up and it ends up being a nice meg! He also found 2 coprolites. I found a broken fish skull cap and when i get home i find that my dad found the other half. I found a real nice... |

It's been a while since I posted a trip from the Bay. Actually, it's been almost a month since anyone posted a Bay trip. I'd bet that every other Bay hunter is in the same boat as me: I'm still going out every week, but I'm just not finding much. We haven't seen any real storms in a good while, so there haven't been any new falls, and nothing is eroding out of the cliff. At the same time, the number of people collecting there... |

well this trip really started on fathers day when i found a broken meg and the guy i was with told me he never picks them up. Well this is why i do.... We didnt get to the beach untill 1 as we drove up we could already see 4 people on the beach. so we got the boat up on the beach just like any day and began to hunt. We really just wanted to see if the boat motor was still working and get some pictures for the people coming to the trip on thursday and friday to get an idea of what to look for. So... |

So we get up normal time and get to the boat ramp and everything is normal but as we start to pull out of the marina the motor comes to a stop. It wouldnt come back on....so we sit there out in the water for about 15 min., and my father says he is going to give it one last try. we got to an earlier start than usual geting to the beach around 5:30 am. On the first walk down the beach i looked down and see a beautiful 1 3/4 mako sitting there on the beach. Well my trip today started out when I saw Obsessed's latest post while I was at work. The fever struck me hard. SO I decided to leave work early to try my luck at a beach I haven't been to in about 2 months.
The tide was pretty low. Not blown out but a real nice summer time low. I wasn't finding much at all really just some tiny teeth. About 3/4 the way down the cliffs I saw a bone sticking out from under a boulder. I picked it up and ... |

There always seem to be something that makes accessing the best fossil spots hard to get to. Sometimes it's the pitch black water that limits your visability or maybe the snakes or gators. At the Calvert Clliffs of Marylands public access is the big problem. The beach can be legally hunted up to the high tide line but you just have trouble getting onto the beach. You either have to know someone to access from thier property or own a boat. Well I don't know any landowners so I... |

We've had tons of rain up here in Maryland over the last week or more. Usually the amount of rain is the result of a Hurricane like Isabel a few years ago. I don't know the final total, but I think it's at least over 7". Normally when I go collecting at my favorite beach(s) along the Chesapeake Bay (Calvert Cliffs), at most the water level is a little above the knee at high tide. When I headed out on Saturday morning, I knew that the conditions would be far from ideal. High tide was about 9 AM, the surf would be high and rough because of all the rain, and more rain was in the forecast. My 2 month old daughter woke me up at 3:30 this morning, and after finally getting her back to sleep, I couldn’t get back to sleep myself. Well, as long as I’m up, I may as well hit the beach! The tide was out but the wind was pushing the water on the beach all morning…..so not to much luck there. After coffee and lunch the wind had died down but still not much luck at (1). |

It's good to get back out there
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |
|
|
|
I haven't been able to get out much over the last few weeks, but on Tuesday I found time to hit my favorite spot along the cliffs. It was very cold, there was intermittent freezing rain falling, there were a half dozen other hunters on the beach, and teeth were scarce. I had a great time out there, though. If I don't go tooth hunting at least once a week, I start having withdrawal sickness, so this trip was definately needed!... |

Sunday: February 3, 2008……..
Mark and I walked up the beach a few times. I found 2 meg fragments out in the water. The largest would have been a beautiful 2 ¾ upper. The tip of another meg probably from a 3- 3 ¼ lower. Some makos and some hemis. The tide came in a lot during high but the water was very clear and extremely calm. Made for good collecting…pre... |

Today was a first for me - I arrived at my favorite beach, and there was nobody else there! Not even any footprints in the sand! I've never had the beach to myself like that before.
Water conditions were very good today, with an extremely low tide, but the weather sucked. It snowed on and off all day, and the stiff wind made it even colder. Luckily, the teeth made up for the cold!<... |

mega trifecta at calvert cliffs

Wednesday at the Calvert cliff formations my brother Bob and i take another shot at locating some more megaladon teeth. Hoping for perfect conditions (which they were) thirty minutes into our endeavour I find my first megaladon tooth of the day, although far from perfect it was still a good find at 2 1/8 inches. Ten minutes later along the waters edge i find a much more well preserved tooth, and at 3 inches, I knew it was going to ... |

Frozen Day at the Beach
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |

I went to my favorite stretch of beach on the cliffs this morning, with temperatures in the mid teens. Ice was everywhere, to the point that the previous high tide never made it to the beach. Teeth were very scarce, but I managed to find a sweet Mako and a small Meg with feeding damage, both of which measured just a hair under 1.5 inches. Even without finding a whole lot of teeth, I still had a great time out there today. I ran into Ton... |

Woke up late and met obsessed down at the beach. The tide was coming in pretty strong by the time we started walking. The good kind of incoming tide. The kind that as its coming in lifts all the lighter sediment off the shell lines on the beach first. Leaving behind all the heavier things. This only lasts for a little while and then the conditions just plain suck. Obsessed and I saw a nice mako at the same t... |

So it was the second day of digging. Bob met me down there at sunrise and to catch the worm. We walked the beach with not much luck. I was working the matrix out and doing a lot of sifting to get ... |

What a difference a day makes - or – its pays to have your lucky charm!!!
Went to the Bay this weekend to accomplish a bunch of non-fossil things and then try to squeeze in a trip or two to the beach. Saturday the tides were too early so I slept in and made it to my favorite spot a few hours after low tide. Surprisingly, I had the beach to myself for the whole time and the winds kept the water far away from the cliff base. Found a bunch of smaller stuff and a few bones ... |

Bay Graveyard
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |
|
|
|
The bay is a big graveyard of sorts. On a very low tide the other day I found an assortment of bones from whales and porpoises. Unfortunately not many teeth were around on this day but it was still good to be out.
I did manage to find a horse tooth (a first for me), a nice cow shark tooth, a small meg, some nice snaggletooth, and another dermal plate (I have found a lot of these lately??). |

The tide was higher then expected due to some nasty winds. We walked the length of the beach picking up basic teeth. All the way at the end was a slump pile. I climbed up the top of it to get a look around and poked through some matrix and after 5 seconds of poking pulled out a 1 7/8 meg….Pretty sweet!

Rainy Day at the Beach 12/30/07
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |

I headed to the beach on Sunday, and got there late as usual, around noon. At least 3 hunters that I knew of had already hit the beach that morning. I hoped that they hadn't found all the good stuff, though, and I wasn't disappointed. As it turned out, the first find of the day was also the best! Approaching my favorite spot, I saw another hunter searching the exact little area I was heading to. He left just as I got there, and as soon as I started searching, I spotted a near-pe... |

The tide was high and winds from the east making for difficult conditions. I decided to hunt the shell line from the high tide the previous night. About 20 minutes later I saw a large Mako partialy burried in the sand. I could only hope it was whole. I plucked it from its resting place and cleaned it off. It was complete and at 2 3/8" my best from the bay. After that the rest of the day was uneventful with only small teeth and some assorted bones. ... |

On Thursday December 27, I headed out to my favorite beach on the Bay. I got there later than I had hoped, around 9 am. I knew that the beach had already been hit by several other hunters. Walking through the water to the hunting grounds, I met a friend of mine, who is a very good hunter, who was heading in. He said that the beach was pretty well picked over even before he got there, and as we were talking, another hunter was coming up from behind me. Needless to say, my expectations were prett... |

This report is from last Sunday. I was able to get down to the cliffs for a while on Sunday morning and even though the wind was blowing from the NE which means larger than normal waves and therfore harder hunting it still beats staying at home!! I ended up doing ok. But both the ... |

Early in November I took a trip to Calvert Cliffs in Calvert Cliffs State Park. Now, the park has a pretty tiny beach, but it seems to be less crowded, especially in the fall and winter because of the 1.8 mile hike to the water. It was cold and windy but I managed. I found two good makos; the first was 1.25" and the other was 1.85", both were of Isurus hastalis. I als... |

When going down to the bay this morning I didint get my hopes too high. The last fossil hunt I was on was at the famous Lee Creek mine in NC, and it would be very difficult to top that. Over all this was a good hunt. Nothing very large but some real nice... |

Private community so i was hoping even though I was late getting there I would be the first one on the beach. No luck at that I saw footprints walkin the entire beach. So basically it was a windy friday moning at one of my favorite spots on the cliffs. Tide was pretty far out but as i made my way down the beach I saw something that made me forget all about the tide. A FRESH FALL AND A BIG ONE. Well not a big one but a nice one. I walked towards it and hopped up. I could tell i want the first one to see it due to the fact that someone had already dug some of it up. But never the less I found some area that looked potentially promising. So about 30 minutes into ... |

There was a cold northwest wind a first light. I was the crazy boy in his waders piled with layers of clothing and just as happy as could be. The first thing came from the swwet meg staring me in the face laying on some clay pebbles about two feet from where the normal surf line would be.....WOULD BE.....but today the wind had dragged the tide out about 50 feet. Just the other day I tried a new spot a little further down the cliffs than I usually look for fossils. At first I thought I had wasted my time only 5 small teeth after almost a mile of walking then I came to a area of cliffs with the water splashing up against them. I pushed on wading in waist deep water. After a hundred yards there was a small stretch of beach with huge blocks that had fallen from the cliffs.
