It's been a while since I posted a trip from the Bay.  Actually, it's been almost a month since anyone posted a Bay trip.  I'd bet that every other Bay hunter is in the same boat as me: I'm still going out every week, but I'm just not finding much.  We haven't seen any real storms in a good while, so there haven't been any new falls, and nothing is eroding out of the cliff.  At the same time, the number of people collecting there...

Now I have three...but two of the three are dinged up a bit.  This one has one serrartion missing but the rest is real nice...would have been sweet!  One nice poroise tooth, some good snaggletooth teeth, and an angel shark tooth round out a decent trip.

There always seem to be something that makes accessing the best fossil spots hard to get to. Sometimes it's the pitch black water that limits your visability or maybe the snakes or gators. At the Calvert Clliffs of Marylands public access is the big problem. The beach can be legally hunted up to the high tide line but you just have trouble getting onto the beach. You either have to know someone to access from thier property or own a boat. Well I don't know any landowners so I...

Its funny how things happen.  I had been several times down to the bay and the megs always seemed to be hiding from my watchful eyes.  Now I have found three megs on two trips to the bay!! 

This was a very average hunt until I found the first meg.  A decent 2 1/8" with a good root, sharpe serrations and a very wide bourlette for its size.  It was out in the open...easy pickins. ...

Had a good hunt.  Any time you can get two pretty rare teeth on one trip you have just got to be happy. 

Its been a while since I have found a whole meg on the bay...its 2.5" even and in relatively good shape.  I love megs.  The cow symphyseal has two chipped serrations...but its got a whole root and so very rare I was still pumped.  Its only my second one ever so that was cool.  I also...

  The beach had been pretty well picked over by the time I got there Wednesday afternoon, and although I had scored a sweet Mako, the Megs were nowhere to be seen.  I decided to head back in, and call it a day, happy with the nicest Mako that I've found in a while, plus two lowers.  I love the curved laterals, and this one was in great condition and good sized at 1-5/8ths.  <...

SATURDAY     morning was foggy and muggy. They were calling for temps in the mid 90s and 100% humidity. I think that equels out to feeling something like 136 degrees. The fog blocked the sun until around 2pm. I decided to go kayaking. The beach was crawling with people but I did get to meet bmore for the first time. The best thing there ended up being a squalodon tooth + a few ok makos.....nothing great. And by that...

Make no mistake the bay is not Lee Creek, but sometimes you can find teeth that have just "melted" out of the matrix.   These gems can be just as pristine and in some cases have a very similar color to the famous teeth from the south.

  These teeth are from two trips to the Bay this week.  On Wednesday, the forecast sounded good for a blowout tide, so I headed out around noon for the afternoon low, but the blowout didn't happen.  I didn't find a whole lot, but I did get my largest Bay Mako to date.  It's missing a root lobe, and the tip is chipped, but it still measures just over 2 inches.

I spent the weekend camping near Calvert county MD, I didn't find any big ones but with as dry as it has been this summer I'm happy to have found what I did. This is also the first time I saw someone sifting for teeth, I've never done that before but look forward to giving it a try.

  The plan for this past Sunday was to get to Purse State Park at about 10 am, about 2 hours after high tide, spend the first hour or so walking as far south as I could go, and then spend the day hunting for that perfect Otodus that I know is out there waiting for me.  Unfortunately, I couldn't get on the road until about 11 am, so the 1 1/2 hour drive one-way killed that plan.  I decided to head to Brownie Beach instead.

7:30 am to 11:30----1pm to 4:45pm-----and finally 5pm to dark.  I spent my time on two different beaches and man without much to show for it. The tide was out but the wind was pushing the water on the beach all morning…..so not to much luck there. After coffee and lunch the wind had died down but still not much luck at (1).

  Today was a first for me - I arrived at my favorite beach, and there was nobody else there!  Not even any footprints in the sand!  I've never had the beach to myself like that before.

  Water conditions were very good today, with an extremely low tide, but the weather sucked.  It snowed on and off all day, and the stiff wind made it even colder.  Luckily, the teeth made up for the cold!<...

The bay is a big graveyard of sorts.  On a very low tide the other day I found an assortment of bones from whales and porpoises.  Unfortunately not many teeth were around on this day but it was still good to be out. 

I did manage to find a horse tooth (a first for me), a nice cow shark tooth, a small meg, some nice snaggletooth, and another dermal plate (I have found a lot of these lately??).

The tide was high and winds from the east making for difficult conditions. I decided to hunt the shell line from the high tide the previous night. About 20 minutes later I saw a large Mako partialy burried in the sand. I could only hope it was whole. I plucked it from its resting place and cleaned it off. It was complete and at 2 3/8" my best from the bay. After that the rest of the day was uneventful with only small teeth and some assorted bones.

So I finally own a digital camera so you all should be seeing alot more good posts from  me...cliffs permitting.  Anyway here are some interesting finds Ive had from the Calvert formation within the last year.

The first is a mystery bone I found why wading in the water. Looks like an antler to me but its hollow inside?

I found this odd shaped "bone-like" fossil several years ago along Calvert Cliffs, MD.  For some reason, I think it's some sort of fish bone/fossil, but not really sure.  I actually have two of these, and they are identical.  Anyone out there know what this is or have one like it?

There was a cold northwest wind a first light. I was the crazy boy in his waders piled with layers of clothing and just as happy as could be. The first thing came from the swwet meg staring me in the face laying on some clay pebbles about two feet from where the normal surf line would be.....WOULD BE.....but today the wind had dragged the tide out about 50 feet. This post is from a little while ago. I went to my favorite beach and was lucky enough to be first. I found only some small worn teeth while walking down the mile or so to the end of accessible beach. On the way back up I passed 4 other collectors. Just after passing the last of them and being almost all the way back to the beginning I found a really nice Mako and then only a few steps further I saw the tip of a root sticking up out of the gravel. I knew it wasn’t a shark too...
